Reverse/backup lights LED conversion

Picked up a set of reverse/backup light resistors and LED bulbs from gen5diy.com . The rear end is finally free of yellow halogen light (I did the LED license plate bulb conversion that Glen e did a post on).




I double-taped the resistor to the light assembly, instead of screwing it to the car body like gen5diy instructed... it's easy to reach and see if heat is becoming a problem, I'll post results after an hour drive. I don't think it'll be an issue.

Nice, but that resistor can get very hot, should have mounted it to the metal body, not the plastic taillight.

Wait up! You mean my $37k 2014 2SSRS came stock w/ LED reverse bulbs, but my newly ordered 16' 2SS for $50k comes with halogens??!!

When I brought this up on the forum I about got murdered on here for complaining about it! It didn't make sense to me to have an all LED tail light except one damn bulb.

I'm still in shock that the license plate bulbs still are halogen, but for them to actually go backwards on the reverse bulbs blows my mind. That was one of the coolest things of the rear of the 5th gen refresh, the rear LED lighting.

I hope the new darken tail lamps they finally release will come with LED. I don't know how to or want to hack into cables for resistors. I'm surprised resistors are even required for backup light... Typically resistors are for flashing bulbs, like turn bulbs.

I agree that it's pretty bad... no reason a brand new car should use halogen bulbs :/ a lot of buyers will see that as chintzy. I also can't see how they could have saved enough money to warrant all of these halogen bulbs. The turn signals and side marker lights are also halogen

Gen5diy sells a harness, no need to splice - Gen6-Camaro-Reverse-Lamp-LED-Harness/. As for the reason; it has something to do with current always being applied to the reverse lights, LED bulbs would be constantly on without a resistor "using" that current.

I don't get it either... was it really that much cheaper to design a system that uses halogen bulbs for just a few lights in the entire car?
