P0420 Code on Prospective Purchase
So I have a prospective purchase of a 2016 Camaro 2SS with 31,000 miles on it. No mods to the car other than tint and upgraded wheels. The car has a P0420 code and the owner says its the "upflow" O2 sensor. So I got the price down to a very good price, and he said that he was going to have it fixed, but at the price Im paying he's not willing to go through the trouble. So, my question is, is this type of code covered under warranty? And is the upflow sensor a common problem with this code for a 16 camaro? Thanks!
I did post this in the "issues" forum, but no responses. I also want to add to this forum because it's also part of a purchase decision that I could use opinions on. |

Pretty sure that code is related to the emissions system. |

Check and see if the secondary cats have been deleted.

P0420 is "Catalyst Efficiency below threshold Bank 1". P0430 would be for Bank 2. I would be more concerned with the rear 02 (down stream/post catalyst) 02 sensor, leaks in exhaust before that sensor or the actual converter itself. In my experience, outside of GM cars, it is the majority of the time the catalsyt itself. As for if it is a warrantable condition, that depends on the warranty start date, the mileage is ok though. If it is actually the catalyst, thats a federal warranty of 8 years/80,000 miles.

02s would have their own codes, not a 420 or a 430. The dealer you are buying it from should be taking care of that.

There are 4 cats on these cars. It's common for the 420 or 430 code to pop up after the rear cats get deleted due to a leak at the welds. That is the reason why I mentioned it. Point is, code 420/430 is normally triggered due to a an exhaust leak around the cat area in the exhaust throwing off the rear o2 readings.

Maybe I’m missing something but the car, based solely off year and mileage, would seem to still be under warranty. Why can’t the seller have this addressed, and provide you the documentation, prior to selling? I understand you negotiated the price down due to the CEL but if it’s under warranty, why? It just seems weird to me.
I’d be cautious that some undisclosed modifications were done and perhaps reverted to stock for selling purposes but something is amiss whereby if it had to go to a dealer and an ECU calibration was sent to GM there may be some questions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

A P0420/P0430 can be related to a bad cat, or a bad O2 sensor. I've had the issue twice on a past car and both times it was the cat.
Given that this issue is covered under warranty for an unmolested car, the seller's unwillingness to correct this issue suggests the possibility of non-factory cats, or similar. |

Agree with others above... something fishy here.
Could this guy have done something screwy that basically destroyed the cat, making him unwilling to submit to GM as a warranty claim? There are some horrendous possibilities: http://www.easterncatalytic.com/educ...he-po42o-code/ Without knowing more about the car or the owner, I would be cautious. |

Thank you all so much for the info. It is a private seller, so I'm treading carefully here. I'll keep you updated on how I proceed. Again, thank you, I take all your responses seriously.

Your profile says you're in New Jersey. Don't you have state inspection? Aren't you going to fail if there's a code?
What is the law in your state? Here in MA, the seller is responsible for the cost of repairs if the car fails, or has to take the car back. Why would you buy a car that has a code, and without knowing how much it would cost to fix? Don't do it. |

I believe they also check for presence of a gas cap or equivalent (like on the Camaro). No safety inspection. No tail pipe sniffer. |
