I purchased it directly from Dimple, the website shows a blue pug but I received a black oxide one. Anyway, I emailed them and will follow up with the response. It did collect a bit of fuzz so I'm glad to have it I was just disappointed with the patina.

Is a magnetic drain plug really necessary? Why aren't they original equipment for GM?

If you are bitching about the rust, you'll get just that, with contact near the aluminum engine block. Especially if the coating on the plug isn't up to snuff.

That's a lot of freaking money for a drain plug.

Opinions vary on their worth, but for the < $30 it cost me for the Dimple plug and the amount of metallic particles it picked up between the 1st and 2nd oil change (see post 4), it's worth it to me.

they used to be, probably saving money was more important than delivering a quality product for GM

... aren't you just catching it before it goes into the filter? What's the point of that?

I looked into the cheap options and the problem I had with those is it looked like the temp capability of the magnet they were using had no capability at operating oil temp. I'd rather just keep the stock plug than use that.

Opinions vary on the value in these magnetic plugs. At one time GM felt they were value added enough to include them on many applications (all older GM products I've owned had magnetic oil pan drain plugs), but recently they stopped using the magnetic plugs. I suspect they were cost reduced out.

Well, I guess this is the answer, I would rather the blue epoxy and I live on Cape Cod, no salt yet other than in the water. On the positive side, they read and answer inquiries.

"Yes the blue coated plugs were an offering going back but no one liked the color so by popular demand we switched to the original factory coating for that size which is black. A new web site in being done so I can make all changes, myself. So I can keep it up to date.
We have to make them out of steel so the magnet will stick to the metal besides being epoxy coated, otherwise I would make them out of stainless which 316 stainless looks rusty on the surface as well.

I would say in your climate since September with the salts on the road and all, it would rust. Some cars come with a plastic shield at the bottom of the car to keep spray off the engine components, which helps some.

The plug will continue to work beautifully for the life of the car.
To ensure no surface rust paint the outside of the plug with Glyptol or an electrical wire sealing varnish, I suggested that to a Michigan maintenance group and after use they loved the results so much they even painted the whole rear ends for their snow plowing trucks. Extreme salt conditions, for sure, so it will work on your car as well"

You've got an oil filter that you change with every oil change.
I see a magnetic drain plug as completely pointless, personally.

Get a magnetic drain plug they said...

There’s a little bit more to consider when purchasing a magnetic drain plug than price.

That being said Dimple are generally regarded as pretty good quality. I had the anodized blue blue before switching to a Stahlbus. Even with other vehicles, using Dimple products, I’ve never had 1 rust or tarnish in any way.
