CAI
How much hp increase can a guy expect by adding a cold air intake? Also, does it add much increase in sound? Does the computer need to be tuned to accommodate the CAI?
Thanks in advance.

It really depends on what kind of CAI, there is a CAI comparision thread with dyno numbers if you search. Most CAIs will not need a tune.

The sound will increase, but not by a whole lot.
Different brands claim anywhere from a 15 to a 25 HP gain; I have the K&N CAI and felt a small difference when I installed it, but haven't had it dyno'd so can't say how much (K&N claims an 18HP gain). No you don't need to get a tune if you install one.

Here we go, Jannetty Racing did a dyno comparison of various cold air intakes.

If you are buying it for that reason then don't bother. I did not notice any increase at all and I have a cai with the scoop.

consider it a cosmetic mod over anything else.

Hp gain won't be noticeable but there will be a throttle improvement.

We received the best gains with the CAI brand intake. Cold Air Inductions. We have been selling them here for a while and always have discounts for board members. Gains generally sit around 12-15 rwhp with a couple extra HP if you order the race scoop to go with it.

I got my CAI brand used from a member on here. It perked it up a little bit and the sound from the engine seemed to get a little lower in tone.

You will gain hp, but when gaining ~15hp on a ~4XXhp car, it's not going to throw you in your seat like if you add a cam or forced induction. An intake is merely one piece of the puzzle. A tune is not required.

The z/28 cai has been dynoed by members getting very good results. I cant remember who did it but they posted it here on camaro 5 something like 18 rwhp . I don't think any sponsors sell it here that's why it doesn't get much attention.

i bought the Vararam CAI, its not pretty but in the vette community they are big. I think theirs is designed for performance versus the others that just look good.

if you have a V6, I can tell you that it "feels" stronger in the seat and definitely helps with making engine deeper and louder.
