This is exactly what I was thinking. I've heard several times that he posted identical times down to the tenth in a GT350R and a GEN6 SS 1LE at Willow Springs. I wish I could find proof of this though.

Funny story, when I was an early teenager I met Randy inside a Cycle Gear store in California when he was here for a SPEED World Challenge race at Sonoma. My dad and I weren't entirely sure it was him, but I decided to send him an email asking if it was. Turns out it was, and we maintained contact for sometime until the next season when he invited my dad and I to the race at Laguna Seca.

We stayed in contact over the next few years and he randomly contacted me saying one of his old Honda motorcycles was stuck in CA and he needed a place to temporaily keep it. I ended up storing it at my childhood house for over a year until he came by one day to drive it back across the country on a trailer.

Here is what I found for times

SS 1LE
Quote:
At the big track at Willow Springs Raceway, we had Randy lap a SS 1LE, a ZL1 with a six-speed manual and a ZL1 with the 10-speed auto. The 1LE ran a 1:28.29. That's a great lap, especially when you consider that time is 0.1 second ahead of the previous-generation Camaro Z/28, which is a former BDC winner and track-focused monster with more horsepower and torque.

And GT350R
Quote:
The second thing you should note is that the Camaro ZL1 was 1.74 seconds slower this time out than it was the last time (1:27.90 versus 1:26.16; the GT350R ran a 1:28.29).

dang seanblurr, almost an unbelievable story. Its great though that you kept in contact with him. I can only imagine what my kids would say hoping they grow up gear heads. Just talking to people could really open doors to new opportunities.

I think there was a longer video too but Motor Trend may have pulled it off of YouTube along with most of their videos.
There's that one, and there's also this one

That's amazing! I always imagined that the Camaro SS1LE would easily go H2H VS the Shelby GT350, but not the Shelby GT350R

Those lap times were recorded on different days though, under different conditions, and possibly even different drivers. A more accurate representation is here, where both were tested on the same day by Randy.

I'll agree with you that to get a real accurate assessment on how the two cars lap a track compared to each other you need to run them back to back, but I'll also say that Laguna Sega seems like a faster track with more long straights than Willow Springs and that would benefit the GT350R with it's weight and HP advantage. Probably also a gear advantage as well.

Most claim that Randy put up both lap times but IDK for sure. Just going off what's commonly posted.

Either way, the SS 1LE is a Unicorn of a car.

It is right there with the GT350R and the M4 GTS, both of which cost A LOT more (real world figures) that the 1LE.

I suspect Randy chose the turbo 1LE for its light weight and handling characteristics. This should silence the "should've got a V8" crowd considerably
In reality any 1LE is a great choice. I've owned an SS 1LE, and now drive a 2.0T. If I had the garage space I'd have one of each engine type, each in a different color.

The Cup 2 tires can give a few quick laps even on a PP2 Stang that's for sure

So do you think if the 1LE had Cup2 tires. That it would post some faster laps? Are the Cup2 tires that much better? Please inform because i know both are good tires.I just don't know how much better one is over the other.
