Waxing a 1LE

Are you supposed to wax the black pieces like the hood/mirrors/spoiler/splitter/etc? Also on the 19's should you wax the grill? It doesn't exactly come off as being painted. I don't want to put wax on something that's not painted and have it stain into it like it does on plastic.

If it matter I use Collinite #845.

I use Zaino products exclusively. I don't polish the hood, I do put Z12 (I think...) spray on it. I do polish all the other plastic pieces.

I'd just go with a ceramic sealant, I use Carpro Hydro2foam diluted 10:1. Spray it on, wipe it in just like you're washing the car, and hose it off. It works on everything including all the black plastic, hood vinyl, windows, wheels... It's far better than any wax I've used, easier to apply, no wiping off.

Wax or polish, no. Get some Adam's or Chemical Guys matte detailer.

With Collinite I wouldn’t wax those black porous plastic pieces, if the black part is gloss paint, it’s ok.

Wipe the black plastic stuff down with something like 303 aero protectant.

PS. Times have changed. There are so many products that are easier than collinite and do just as good a job. Many of them are mentioned above from the others posting here.

Hmmm.... I must be behind the times. Lol

So these spray on sealants protect as well as Collinite #845? We're talking against the sun, and rain, etc? Do you need one of those foam sprayers? How long does their coats generally protect for?

I'd definitely be interested in upgrading if it protects as well, looks as good, and doesn't require a new coat ever 2 weeks.

Thanks,

Jesse

Lasts me a few months, through several conventional washes... and it works better than any wax, much less dirt sticks to the car, it feels like a layer of teflon.

Sounds like a nice upgrade. I'm going to give the Carpro Hydrofoam a shot.

Do you use it under the hood?

I haven't tried that, but it is intended to be used as a carwash soap so I suppose anything you'd normally wash is fair game.

I don't recommend using it as a carwash soap though, it dilutes it too much and it's not as effective. I have had best results by washing the car conventionally, removing most of the standing water on horizontal surfaces, then apply it diluted 10:1 with a spray bottle and wash mit or cloth, and finally hose it off thoroughly.

I also use Carpro ECH2O diluted 20:1 with a little reload added (optionally, it adds a bit more ceramic material) as quick detail spray.

With the dilution ratios these products will last me several years and I think quite a few products I've purchased in the past are going to sit there on the shelf and never be used again...

I use Chemical Guys Matte Detailer on all the black plastic and the black wheels. I use their Black Luminous Glow Wax on the rest of the car including the carbon fiber pieces. The wax is pricey, but it goes along way and really looks great on dark colors. I used it on my black GT500 for years and now on this dark blue ZL1 /LE. The Meticulous Matte Detail Spray is awesome stuff as well. It lays down a nice seal along with removing dirt and debris. I spray it on and let it sit a few seconds then buff it off. All the manufacturers make similar products, I just like the deals Chemical Guys run and whenever I had questions about any of there products, they actually emailed me back with replies.

Glen, with 13 cycles of Zaino, is it worth switching to some ceramic application? My car looks like glass, nothing stocks and seldom have only to just spray it off.

Use Gyeon Matte Ceramic Coating for the matte material including the hood wrap. Do not use traditional wax on the matte finishes.

Is it okay to claybar the hood and other matte pieces? Obviously polish would be a no-no.
