Oil Change

I have a 2018 1SS with 900 miles on it. I bought it in March 2019. It is obviously not my daily driver. It’s my weekend and summer car. Even though I only have 900 miles on the car the oil life monitor says 34%. Should the oil be changed with only 900 miles on it?

My personal policy is to change the oil around 1,000 miles. YMMV

Oh boy.... dozens of answers here.

Basically change by 1500 miles or 1 year whichever comes first.

There are members here that say you have ruined your engine by waiting to 900 miles and you should have done it at 500 miles. These members should be on meds.....

The 6.2 is the same longblock as the truck/SUV with different intake and exhaust manifolds and tune....I garuntee that many SUV's dont get their first oil change untill 6000 miles.

I wouldn’t change it yet but that’s me personally. I would go buy the owners manual recommended intervals and go from there! As long as you keep the oil level checked and add if necessary, then you should be okay. When I had my 2016 SS I changed the oil at 5,000 miles and everything was good. Also, I used full synthetic oil when I changed it and a good quality oil filter too.

I'd go by the oil life monitor. The new oils are amazing. WAY better than they were when the old "3 months/3000 miles" rule of thumb was used.

Couple that with the fact that engineers have millions to spend to test and analyze data to come up with the algorithm(s) to power the OLM.

Personally, I'd wait until it gets to the teens, especially since you aren't hard on your car, nor do you drive it much.

I'd definitely would go with the recommended oil. I think this new type was designed to limit the valve coking issue in the GDI motors.

Mine is not a DD either. I change the oil & filter when the oil life monitor indicates it is time (I think it starts warning you between 5% to 10% of remaining life).

In fact, last weekend, I changed the Camaro's oil & filter. The oil life monitor indicated 0% and it had been about 1 year ago when I last changed it. I had only driven 1,401 miles since the last change.

On my vehicles that I drive more often, I change the oil & filter either when the OLM says it is due or at 5,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

As a general rule, you should not go more than 1 year between changes.

if you are going to store the car for the winter, this might be a good time. If you will continue to drive it on nice days - I wouldn't worry about it until the oil monitor is more like 20-25% personally. I changed mine at 2000 just for piece of mind but the oil monitor was about 50% at that point. I also changed the diff fluid at that time. Looking back at my records I see I got to 2000 miles in 3 months - I guess I was driving it a lot when I first got it! My car only has 13K miles and is almost 3.5 years old now. I have done 3 oil changes on it - the next one was 7500 and then at 11K.

I get a free oil change from the dealer, so I might just do it. In the future I’d like to do my own oil changes so that I know exactly what was put in and I like to see the condition of the oil when it comes out. Is the filter and oil drain easy to access on these cars?

completely. I didn't take mine back to the dealer for my free oil change. Maybe I'm paranoid, but don't trust them with the car unless it has to go in for some reason. I let them do it on my Colorado.

I never used my free oil changes either on my 2016 SS because I wanted to do it myself! I didn’t get any freebies on my 2017 ZL1 when I bought it because I was the 2nd owner according to the salesman at the Chevy dealership where I bought it. I told him no problem that I do my own anyway.

I’m sure I could research it and find the answer to this next question...what type of oil and filter is best for these cars?

I have used a Mobil 1 filter and Valvoline Synthetic 5W30 in my 2016 and will use the same in my ZL1 when I change it soon. Use the recommended oil weight your owners manual suggests to use and a good filter like GM, Mobil 1, Wix, Napa Gold or a good quality name brand. You can research on this forum as there are many posts on oil changes on the SS.

If you pull the dipstick I'm pretty sure the oil on it is going to still be pretty clean and looking fresh.

Ya which oil is a whole nother can of worms since GM has Changed the spec for the LT1 starting I think in 2019. And it’s the same motor in 2016. I just used dexos1 for my last change that was before the whole change became well known. I’ll probably move to the corvette spec next time.
