How about the modern engine Valvoline? It says it is for direct injection engines? Curious as to thoughts on this one?

Well, as you can see it has Dexos2 on it, so GM approved. But, it is 5w30 hence street only oil.

So if there was no obligation to preserve the cats(I have a few sets of cats here), and out of warranty, what is the better oil and why?

M1 0w40fs ($4/qt) vs M1 0w40esp ($9/qt)

Id suggest you take a read of my OP which describes a role of each component, then go to Mobil1 website and take a peek at their individual data sheets. Then you should be able to arrive at an answer. That's what id do anyway. Cheers!

I did.. now that I will contaminate my question... It’s full saps that’s what the fs stand for, that I do know. The M1 description says that it is good for gdi and turbo gdi and is focused on minimizing deposits but at the same time has a bunch of calcium...which has been blamed for lspi on gdi, so what does that mean? Is it as good as esp or not? So would like to hear your perspective for us that don’t need the cats to last 300,000 miles and want better, cheap oil.

Apparently Mobil1 thinks one is "cheaper"?
That aside, what do you drive?

From my non-expert opinion, plugging cats and creating back pressure aint that good for a motor? So not caring about the cats is only one consideration i would think?
OTOH, Mobil1 15w50 has higher SAPS vs any Dexos2 oil and albeit it is mandated for track ONLY, i would assume at least some folks use it for dual duty? Just an assumption here.
Can you pls post the data sheet for the FS oil? Sorry no time to search for it. Cheers!

PS as far as LSPI...based in my understanding, no definite root cause has been found for it and it seems limited to turbo motors.

The high ash content coincides with the no dpf spec, therefore would eliminate dexos 2 right off the bat.

The viscosities, including HTHS, are almost identical to 0w40esp (basically the thinnest 40w around, and will likely quickly shear to a thick 30w in most applications)

It is interesting that HTHS number is fairly low given extremely high Base number. I am also wondering why it is half price as compared to the Dexos2 oil? What type of an application are you looking for (street/track) and for what car?
And - what are your conclusions given you seem to know the subject?

I just don’t know. I have a 12 pack of M1 0w40esp dexos 2 here though. When Mobil 1 comes out and says they designed an oil specifically for your engine, it’s hard to ignore. An empty marketing statement or not, it drew me in. I’ll likely just run it

Hard to argue with that, especially given your SS sees strip duty and that oil is officially guaranteed for both street and track. Given Valvoline situation, i will switch to it as well. Cheers!

WMart still has the 5w40 MST. I already had a 40 quarts on the shelf, now I will have 40 more. Ended up having a discount on my cart online, so, ended up just over $6/quart. That will take me through my extended warranty.

While looking for Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 Dexos 2, I discovered Mobil 1 5W30 Dexos 2.

I have not seen this oil discussed or brought up before, is it new? Was it released before this thread was originally posted?

Is Mobil 1 5W30 Dexos 2 good for our cars (SS LT1)?

No, it's not new, and it's more than adequate if you don't plan to track your car.

Good question. I dont recall seeing any 5w30s meeting Dexos2 std on the GM Dexos website (vs Dexos1 Gen2) when i wrote my OP. But i may be mistaken here.
I also believe the manuals specifically call for 5w30 Dexos1 Gen2, but i havent read a 2020 manual.

Id assume Dexos2 is even better than Dexos1 Gen2, so personally i would not hesitate using it for DD (only) duty.
Especially the ESP Formula 5w30 Dexos2.

Note that 0w40 Dexos2 is required as a dual purpose DD and track oil. Also note, that while manuals list the requirement as just "0w40 Dexos2" (not mentionining any specific manufacturer, or oil names) the factory fill oil is Mobil1 ESP Formula 0w40. I am mentioning it as that oil has been developed specifically for an LT1 V8 motor (according to Mobil1). I am also mentioning it as there is a Mobil1 ESP 0w40 without "Formula" in its name. Presumably this is not the same oil as the latter.
Just an fyi. Cheers!
