trickle charger - hook up to the engine bay posts or direct to battery in trunk?

We are coming into cold weather, I am going to put a trickle charger on the car. It gets driven once a month at most in the winter if there is no salt out.

Do you install the trickle charger directly to the battery in the rear or to the terminals in the engine bay? The rear positive post is difficult to get to.

2022 Camaro SS 1LE with 15k miles, I hope the battery isn't already damaged from never seeing a trickle charger.

Mine is on the posts under the hood as well, seems to work fine but I was wondering the same... I just started using one about 6 months ago or so, wish I had started sooner however it does seem to have rejuvenated my battery some as when I hook the charger back up it always shows the battery as good now where it used to show it as marginal for the first few months...

I connect mine to the contacts under the hood, and then run the cord down past the headers on the driver side so it doesn’t chafe on the paint. Those Noco chargers are awesome.

Under hood is fine. The trickle mode is less than 1 amp, so a lot of chargers are fine. Just make sure it continues to trickle once it detects full charge.

Doubt you damaged the battery by not using trickle. Deep discharge and frequent start/stop cycling are two common battery killers. Our cars do not have stop/start.

My charging cables have a quick disconnect in the cord, so it's connected directly to the battery. The cable is hanging out of the removeable access panel, so I can quickly connect & disconnect the cable in the trunk.

I keep mine under the hood for 2 reasons.

1) I can just set the hood down (not close it all the way) and the wire runs out without being pinched. I also lay down a microfiber where the cable would be touching the paint. I don't like the idea of keeping my trunk open, or running the cable through it when closed.

2) The power outlet next to my trunk would be a trip hazard when trying to get to my other vehicles, go outside, take trash out, etc...

I can add a 3rd:
certain rodents seem to like the insulation under the hood for nesting. if you are trickling this car over winter, keeping the hood open might deter them from chewing things up.

My Z sits for winter from around Halloween weekend to middle May(depending on temps and weather). So since it's 6-7 months, I hook it up in the trunk directly to the posts.

Under the hood and I run the cord thru the opening where the hood latches and then out the grill.

this thread describes the connection points for under the hood method fairly well.
