Car over heating.

Car is a 2018 ZL1 A10. Over heated today going 75 just cruising. Car is at the dealership right now. The fans come on but the temps rise pretty high with reduced engine power coming on. Any ideas?

History: car has kooks ceramic coated no cats, 9.1 pulley, RF intake, 160 thermostat. I’m wondering if the thermostat is stuck and not flowing. There is plenty of fluid. Oil looks good too with recent oil change about 2k miles ago.

Was it boiling over?
Maybe the temp sensor is messed up.

Have you been driving it with the mods for a while now? The reason I ask is because maybe there is an air pocket in the system? I pretty much have the same car and mods other than the thermostat change with no issue.

Mods were done about 3k miles ago. No problems at all. After pulling over and letting it cool down I drove it to the dealer about 3 miles away and watched the temps climb from 170 to 210 in about 2 minutes. I pulled over about 1 mile from dealer, turned it off and the fans were running. After a couple of minutes the fans turned off and I started up again. Once pulling into the dealer the temp was at 215 and I shut it down. I don’t think the coolant is circulating so maybe thermostat or water pump. Could also be air in the system but I have no experience with that.

It really does sound like a faulty thermostat that got changed. In my lifetime, this has happened to me. It opens, but not all the way. The best way to test it yourself, if you want to, is to boil it and watch what it does. That's what I did and it just opened halfway.

These engines are really sensitive to air pockets in the system, and it has a lot of places for air to get trapped. They basically put the system under vacuum before introducing coolant, and it is a lengthy process to get all of the air out. Wouldn't surprise me that that's all it is.

My 16 z06 had the exact same thing happen.

Failed mishimoto 160* thermostat. The rubber ring fell out of the grove. Once I replaced it, it overheated again and after pulling the water pump (it was fine) I replaced the tensioner. That fixed it up.

I'm not sure if the thermostat failed first, or if the tensior failed first and caused the thermostat to fail.

I wish you luck on getting your modded Camaro worked on at a dealership. I’m surprised they will even look at it but hopefully there is a tech there that finds out the cause of the overheating. Good luck!

My wild guess is an air pocket. Just did a 2000 mile road trip with similar mods to yours. Temp only exceeded 185 once, stuck in a traffic jam on a warm day it briefly climbed to 195 and the settled back to 185. Air pocket issue is my guess.

Let me know...got the lockout kit & all the bolts needed, pending the BMR upper / lower / trailing arms & those will be here early next week.

Hoping to have everything installed in the next couple of weeks.

So my car is still at the dealership. They tell me that the computer doesn’t say why it’s over heating. Will the computer know if the thermostat is opening or if it’s stuck? I can’t imagine there’s a sensor for that. Not sure what to do next?

You're gonna have to pull the thermostat and see if it's working properly.
