Catch can for lt4?

Couldn't find any results on this one for the zl1's. Is it necessary like on the lt1? I'm reading this article ( http://www.superchevy.com/features/1...e_z06s_lt4_v8/ ) and they're claiming "A PCV separator, which is unique to the LT4, was developed to keep oily air from being drawn through the intake, where it could end up collecting on the back of the intake valves." Now this is an article for the c7z, so I'm not sure if it's different for the zl1.

Not sure, but by looking at photos of engine bay, the Mishimoto catch can for the SS might work. I have one installed with my Edelbrock E-Force.

Installing a catch can on the dirty side of the LT4 is a little more complicated than the LT1 or other LS engines. It involves some significant modification.

With GM being quick to void the power train warranty for anything that deviates from stock, I didn't feel installing cc was worth the risk. That seemed to be the consensus of those that replied to my question.

I'm mean this question legitimately as an engine novice - but considering a stock ZL1, wouldn't it have come with one if it was really needed? Especially given the performance benchmarks that have been hit with the car so far.

I don't think you can apply that logic to those already inclined to mod...why add a CAI, bigger SC, tune, etc?? GM already dialed the car to where it should be.

Folks who are going to mod simply enjoy it & get satisfaction on improving what GM gave them. I think most all understand the liability when it comes to warrantee...if it makes them happy, have at it.

No they wont come with them, reason being is they have to be emptied as the gaseous oil turns into a liquid. If that can is left too long and get full then the liquid can be drawn down the hose and into the engine which can cause serious issues.

That is the main reason GM doesn't use them, they cant trust the owners to empty them regularly. They are needed though to keep the oil mist out of the combustion process.

I checked it out this morning and it appears as though that the 2 quick connects that would have ran into the intake on the lt1 are running into a box (similar to a catch can) on the lt4. Theres a 3rd quick connect that runs from that box to a belly on the intake tube. (maybe for ventilation purposes?) now if an aftermarket intake deletes that line running to the tube, then it's just like a catch can.

The engineer side of me thinks there has to be a way to make a CC that once the oil mist becomes a liquid and is in the can that it could someone how drain past a check ball and back into the oil pan system.

That would be possible I'm sure except the vapors caught are not just oil. Im guessing they're not doing it for contamination purposes

The LT4 comes with a "clean side" oil separator system...and it drains back into the sump. Everyone has an opinion on this highly controversial topic...but that speaks volumes to me...

The best thing you can do is pull the supercharger cover and see if there is oil in it.

It does vary from the lt1 though. This is the box that the lines run to as opposed to running back into the intake like the lt1

I believe the center line runs into the intake as a vacuum feed.
