Liqui Moly 0W-40 vs Mobil 1 Supercar
Hi all,
I recently had my 13K oil change done by a small shop and they recommended Liqui Moly 0W-40 compared to the Mobil 1 ESP. Any repercussions running that on the LT1 V8 engines vs the dexos2? As long as they're the same viscosity and they're both super good brands I don't think there should be any differences or adverse effects. I just thought its weird there's only one specific oil brand that's dexos2 approved. Any thoughts? |

Standing by for the usual arguments.
My questions are always the same: 1) Why go with a brand that isn’t recommended by the manufacturer? ‘Because a shop recommended’ feels like a really bad answer. 2) Tell me about any (A) engine failure caused by an oil brand or (B) an engine that lasted 500K miles because of the brand of oil that was used? 3) If you’re not solving for question #2 A or B - I go back to question 1. I’ve driven cars for a few million miles. 30 years, driving an average of 100K miles per year. I’ve used synthetics ever since they came out from Mobil, Pennzoil, Royal Purple, QuakerState, Amsoil, Castrol and none of which killed the motor, nor do I think they added 1,000’s of miles of life. Change your oil and filter regularly, use a synthetic oil and you’ll like have a motor that’ll last for 175 to 200K miles without issue.

I believe the Amsoil 0w40 is also not Dexos approved but high quality. I don't see a problem with using high quality oil like Amsoil or Liquid Moly which has good reviews.

Liqui Moly for my Mercedes. Serviced three weeks ago.
Supercar for my 2022 ZL1 and 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. Both just done recently.

Mobil1, Amelie, and Motul are the only Dexos2 oils I have found on Amazon. Nobody ever seems to have much to say about anything besides Mobil1. Having an opinion on an oil thread is setting myself for a beatdown, but anyways...
From my albeit limited understanding, reading BITOG and other sources, the main defining characteristic of the DEXOS2 standard is low SAPS (sulphate ash (SA), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S)). Not all "good" oils are necessarily low SAPS. Not all good low SAPS oils have paid for DEXOS2 certification even if they would qualify. 5w40 vs 0w40 makes no significant difference unless you're starting in very cold temps. Several people on this forum believe the higher 40 weight is a "band-aid" for extreme high g-force wet sumps getting momentarily starved, and 30 weight is adequate for 99.999% of everyday situations. Take all that for what it's worth. I'll prob just pay DEXOS2 tax with the General's seemingly exclusive arrangement with Mobil1 to avoid any warranty complications. |

It is $10 a qt, not on sale. $100 oil change every 5k-ish miles should be the last thing people are worried about when buying a high performance car.

M1 0w40 ESPx3, has dexos2 and Porsche c40 approval and can be had for a great price with the autozone deal. Porsche approval is harder to meet than dexos2. Bought some to also top up the lady's GTS boxer.
