Bye bye Camaro, hello 392..?

Before anyone grabs their pitchforks, I haven’t sold the Camaro...YET. I’ve been seriously contemplating the past month or so whether I hang on to it, or get into something different. We are expecting our first baby come October, so the waters will really be changing. As we all know, the car market is insane during these times. I don’t daily drive the Camaro, so while I don’t HAVE to get rid of it, I’d hate for it to just consistently collect dust in the garage. I just don’t know how/if it would work with the baby. I think it will be a big hassle getting the car seat in/out, and there would be no room for a passenger in the rear (in the even the baby needs tending to in transit). I think the combination of those two things would keep the car parked.

I figured if I do plan on getting out of the SS, now would be the time to do it. I’ve had my eye on getting a Charger ScatPack (392), as that would afford MUCH more space and I’m able to get affiliate pricing. I know Farmer just picked up a Challenger. I’m curious to hear from those who have switched from a Camaro to the Charger? I’ve had a rental Charger RT for a week, so I’m somewhat familiar with the cars. I have little doubt that I will love the 392 motor, but I hope I can live with the rest of the car. Obviously the handling is quite different, which I know and would expect.

I traded my 1999 corvette for a stroller. It was a 3rd car and watching it sit sucked. At the time, like now, the market was up so we sold it.

The 392 is awesome.

Nice! I do wish that the (new) Chargers still had the yellow. That would make the decision a bit easier. I know I had enjoyed the car while I had it for a rental. Sounded great and it was comfortable IIRC (as you had said). I thought the acceleration was fairly great for the size of the car... and that was obviously "just" with the 5.7L.

A bit funny, but sad because I'm sure I can guess how it felt at the time. The SS is our 3rd car as well. I drive it when I can (now), but I really have a hard time believing it is going to be used once things change (at least in the next few years).

Ok, you have your mind made up...lol... My son and his girlfriend have a 2 year old and they have had a Camaro Gen 5 the entire time. It's her daily driver and she takes the kid all over the place with it. If my son is driving and she needs to tend to the kid in the back the front seat moves up plenty for her to sit comfortable in the back with her. They move the car seat from vehicle to vehicle all the time.

Just harassing you... but it is a true story. So if one wanted to hang onto the Camaro and make it work it is very possible to do.

Good luck with your decision, I can't offer any advice on the Dodge platform or the 392.

Yes and no.. LOL. I've been dealing with this for weeks. I'm 6'2" and I don't think there is anyway that I can comfortably drive/shift with her sitting behind me. Right now, there is about 2 inches of room between the back of my seat and the rear seat; the leg room is gone.

lol.. Ya, I'm just harassing ya. I did see a challenger/charger (not positive) coming home on the highway the other night. It looked like Farmers, but with 4 doors. If I was going to go your direction with a family, I would get the 4 doors. I believe it did say SRT on the side of it though??

No, they're disgusting.. I don't know how to say it nicely. I never liked them since they were first released. That and I think most places want an arm and a leg for them; I want new anyway.

I think you need a family SUV or crossover and keep the Camaro for the days you want to go have some fun. (If you can afford to). The Camaro isn't going to go bad hanging out waiting for you to come drive her.

I've owned two 17 challenger SCATs and a 17 Charger 392 Daytona. If you are looking for 90% the performance of the SS but with way more livable space inside, this is the right car.

The infotainment is 10x better in the challenger/charger. The ZF8 speed trans is crispier too. Much tighter shifts when in sport/track mode. They are fantastic cars out of the box.

Now with that being said, they are dead ends to mod. The ECM is encrypted and needs to be swapped with a hardware hacked one if you even want a tune. Tunes with the ECM are like $1500 for maybe 30hp. And all other mods are corvette level taxed/expensive.

On top of that, the engine internals are glass. You are very limited on boost/hp if you want to put on a blower. 600hp MAYBE - borrowed time.

So to put it nicely, these are great cars if all you want to do is drive them and have something quick. If you are a car guy and want to mod, then you will need deep pockets to get a 392 over that 600hp hump safely. Which begs the question that all scat owners who want more power ask. WHY DIDN'T I JUST GET A HELLCAT.

Think about that question good and hard. Especially when you can lease them for pennies on the dollar. Challengers especially and chargers almost as good. A hellcat lease would be the same money wise as a straight up buy for a 392.

My advice would be to lease (or buy if you can afford) a hellcat. But if you are ok with the stock power-level and do not plan to mod, then get the 392. Out of the box, dodge did them all correct with the chassis and powertrain they have. Great cars.

PS I wouldnt buy another one./

I have a 2018 Daytona 392 as my DD. I have had it 3 years now, but I have grown tired of it. It takes up a lot of room in the garage due to its length of 200". It weighs a lot and you can feel it. I will say it is comfortable and has a good sound system if you get the Harmon Kardon. Begining of March i decided to trade it in. I wanted a car that was at least a foot shorter, 4000lbs or less, AWD this time, and yet has same or better performance as the 392 and settled on my first BMW. I ordered a M340i with Xdrive. Wasn't my first choice of car, but wife insisted i get another 4dr car. I also looked at the Audi RS3 but didn't want to wait til 2022 to get one. Then looked at the Cadi Blackwing but no AWD, and looked at Tesla model 3p. Quickest of the bunch but dont like the body gaps on the Tesla. Avg person probably dont care but a car guy as i am it would bother me.

I have a small sedan that I drive to work/during the winter. That still doesn't eliminate the fact that money is being dumped in something that is parked (in the grand scheme of things).
