Scuff on Cylinder Wall - how bad?

Hey guys, I wanted to run this past you. I have an L99 block and I took the heads off and found this small scuff on the side wall. It's not big enough for my fingernail to catch on it, but when I run my finger over it I can just slightly feel it. Does this mean I should completely disassemble and rebuild? Should I let it go and just continue with my build? I am going to take it to a local machine shop today or tomorrow to see what they think, but wanted to ask you guys.

Thanks in advance,

ZSH

A "scuff" would mean it did not wear the metal off there, it could be a carbon
deposit. When you scuff the floor with your shoes, you leave rubber behind
that can be cleaned off the floor.

If that is a scuff, it's probably okay. If it took metal off by scraping, then not really
a good thing. No cylinder wall is going to be spotless after there are some miles
on it.

Looks like it's where the ring ends meet up, for one of the compression or oil rings.

ah, it did take a little of the metal off, but not enough for my finger nail to catch on. I can feel the slightest valley though. What would you do? Not looking to spend a lot of money, but want a semi reliable L99 motor.

I'd put it together and run it.

Yea, I agree. It's very unlikely to cause any issues.

You guys think I should be able to get like 10k miles out of it if all else goes well? No piston slap or crazy engine oil burning? This won't be for a track truck, just daily driver/get on it every now and then.

How many miles are on it, NOW? I can still see the honing cross-hatch pattern on the
walls. That's how fine the process is now days.

I don't think that will cause any issues. If you do a compression test, and it's
good, then you're good. Like I said, it looks like where one of ring ends meet
up.

Hard to say. I had a chevy 350 with a line in the wall I could catch a fingernail on. I didn't want to bore it so I honed it, could still feel the line. I ran it for another 50k miles. I did have to change that plug again though. Looks like the very start of a problem possibly but it will be fine for quite some time I'm sure.

It wouldn't hurt to do a compression test, but from the looks, and the fact it isn't catching your nail...I would personally run it (unless aforementioned comp test fails)

Run it. In the middle of the cylinder wall and not catching a nail. Looks like the motor is not installed. If so, could pull the piston and check the rings if you really wanted to, I wouldn't.

ZSH, do you know the miles on that block? I am just curious since it still seems to have nice cross hatching.
