Question Th400 streetable?

OK so I bought a used th400 in good working order for $100. Obviously it's a 3 speed. Would that trans if built be a good option for the Camaro? It's street driven alot.
345 gears
30" tire

Is this a trick question? Not trying to be smart A**. If you enjoy driving it on the street the TH400 sucks. Your overall gear first gear ratio will be reduced because of the 2.10 Th400 first gear. You will need like 4.11 (or more with a tall tire)rear gear to get you back to where you were. If your primary goal is to get your weight and quarter mile e.t. down then It's a great choice.

I have a th400 with the stock auto rear gear, 3600 stall and 28" tire. Drive it everyday no issues at all. It's a blast with the turbos

There was a time when millions of cars on the road had three speeds...and they drove just fine. With 3.45 gears, it wont be the fastest off the line, but it wont be bad at highway speed.

I don't drive mine much but when I do it's fine on the street. It actually makes me do the speed limit now lol. At 70mph I'm at 3k rpm. Mine doesn't feel like a turd off the line with the 3.45 gears. I'm at 600whp through the th400 and on a loaded mustang dyno

Well when I'm all said and done I'll be over 1000whp with a manual. I've been throwing the auto idea around for sometime. But I built my car for a fun street car not a drag car. But I still want to gap people on the track too lol it's hard pick

TH400 was for many years (20-30) considered the go to transmission in the GM world if you made a lot of power. That said it was always known for "weird" gearing and that "damned electric kickdown switch". For a DD with durability concerns I would probably lean towards the 4L80e. It's big and heavy the gearing is supposedly better and by now they know how to build them strong. In the early days people would make them worse because they didn't know WTF they were doing with them when they tried to make them better.

You're going to enjoy that OD 4th gear for daily commutes. No matter what you need to make sure you have the right rear end gears and converter for your setup.

This is how I know I'm getting old. I went thru all the years in muscle cars buzzing around at 3-3500 RPM on the expressway/freeway and just got sick of it. The noise, the wear and tear on the motor, the fuel consumption. Its just been in the last few years I've gotten into higher horsepower late model cars and really enjoy the comforts of overdrive and NPP exhaust.

Amen brother. Can you imagine what the DD would be like that equals these cars performance say 25 years ago? It would be the rowdiest, unreasonable, gas guzzling monster on the street.

I love the sound of a big pushrod V8 humming down the interstate. That's why I put 4.10s in mine after I swapped to th400. Love it. And I'm in my 40s and 9 out of the 12 camaros I've owned weren't overdrives. Out of all of the mods I've done to mine the gears hurt the mileage the worst. But who cares about that? Lol
I've put 1900 miles on mine in the last month.

Also th400 was good enough for companies like Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Aston Martin to use them. The early ones with the big sprags could take almost 800 hp stock.

I daily my th400 car all the time.
I have 4500 stall and 3.91s

70 mph cruise is no problem. I wouldn't have my car any other way. Plus my car had gone 10.8 in the 1/4 so far and put me at the best of #9 on the fastest sbe cars
