GM Kept Selling Defective Key Years After Recalling It
"Despite recalling a potentially dangerous ignition key more than five years ago, GM continued to sell it as a replacement part to owners of 2010 through 2015 Chevrolet Camaros."

My sister’s ‘14 came with one key that had the actual switchblade still there and 2 sets of the recall keys where they were separated. Previous owner must’ve did the recall with only one key and kept the other one.
The switchblade was definitely very worn though so I bought a key off eBay and had it cut so now 4 sets of keys lol |

Still have my two original keys. Had to a dealership years ago and I signed off on not wanting it done. My knee is a good 6 inches from the ignition. And the dealership you I got my buyback car from keeps sending me recall notices in the mail and calling to get it done. I finally told them to cease and decist calling again. Cause if you do I am going to lawyer up and sue you for harassment. And I have a major beef with said dealership I will not get into in this forum.

Ridiculous article but I wouldn't expect anything less from Consumer Reports.

that was such a complete bull shit recall. you know how uncomfortable you would be for your knee to knock the ignition off. The reason they sold them was because they were not recalled in other vehicles.

When I had my 2011, I never had it changed. I would get the postcard from GM telling me that there was a recall every few months.
I never had an issue with but then again I didn't have 3 pounds of keys, 2 pounds of key rings and 25 different shopping cards attached to it.

When I had my 2010 SS I ignored the recall letters I received from GM and never had it done. Just like JC said above it was nothing but a BS recall due to a few people’s mishaps with their key fobs probably due to the seat being adjusted all the way up or maybe the fob being attached to a large key ring with a lot of keys that pulled it out of the ignition because of the weight. When I traded my 2010 in on the 2016 SS the key fobs went with the car and I had a couple of newer ones that I bought to replace the original defective ones that the buttons were pushed thru on the fobs.

From what I understand the Camaro recall was because if you were 6’ 5” tall, sat on the right seat bolster and twisted yourself sideways annnnnnnd drove your right knee toward the steering column you MIGHT be able to turn the ignition off.
GM was horribly conservative at this time. That being said, if you recalled it you should have taken it out of service.

If memory serves, it was due to the spring in the ignition. It was too weak, although I believe it was just some receiving defective springs. The fix was of course to change the keys.
In my opinion, and I have a 14, is that the fix was worse then the problem as now you have more hanging from your key and you are more likely to hit it then if the key was one unit like originally. |
