A10 in a 2016-2018?

Maybe it’s a stupid question, but theoretically, would it be possible to install the 10 speed transmission that the 2019-2020s have in a 2016-2018 SS Camaro? I’m only asking because I plan on keeping the car forever, and in doing so I would assume that I would want to upgrade or change the transmission at some point considering the A8 doesn’t strike me as a very reliable transmission.

Anything is possible but you would be way, way better off selling or trading your car off and getting one that has an A10.

Yeah, I bet the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.

I dont see why not. Little pricey right now but I imagine in a few years priced will be about average for a performance auto. The question would be ecm/tune.

The A8 has been very reliable, but the torque converter could have the shudder issue. If you’re going to mod the car, just tune the TCM before you get the shudder. For many of us, that has worked beautifully. Worst case scenario if you do get the shudder, you simply get a Circle D converter and chop another couple of tenths off your 1/4 mile time. But getting rid of a car over a trans that has actually been holding big power on a lot of cars on this board over just a tune or converter is silly. Also, the 8L90 has a higher torque rating than the 10L80 in the ‘19-up SS. Something to consider if you decide to ramp up the power. ZL1 gets the best of both worlds, 10 speed with high torque capacity (10L90).

Agreed. Hate what they did to the front of the 19 and 20's. Looks like they tried to make it a mask super hero or something. lol.

THIS.

The 8L90 is tougher. You would save a crap load of cash by just swapping the converter with an aftermarket one and a tune when the time comes...not by trying to swap the 10 speed in there.

Undoubtedly took a downgrade in looks, could've probably put a better sounding set of npp exhaust for what he paid in trade too. Npp isn't terrible, neither is the stock, but at that point I personally couldn't trade and spend more for the less preferable design and slight upgrade in exhaust note.

Looks is a personal thing.
IMHO, I like the 2020 look better than the '18. And a '19 is easily converted to look like a '20.

Have you guys been able to reduce shift and paddle response times on the A8 with a tune? Mine works perfectly and isn't a slouch, but it's not doing its stuff at A10 speeds and I'm always open to improvements.

I first got the shudder in my 2016 when it had 17k miles, dealer did the flush and put in a new converter. I never had another problem until around 45k miles i felt a very light shudder twice.
I was planning on taking it to the dealer in a couple of months (I only had 14k miles left on my warranty) if it continued, but a few weeks later a guy speeding couldnt stop and totalled my 2016.
So I now have a 2019 2SS with even better options package than my 16 2SS and have the 10 speed. It is an amazing trans compared to the 8 speed. totally changes the driving experiance.
