I didn't see this shared but may have missed it.

https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexos2/index.html

The four 0W40 Dexos2 licensed oils:

Quote:
Castrol Edge Castrol Ltd. dexos2™ 0W-40 GB2C1214082 Global

Mobil 1 ESP ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexos2™ 0W-40 GB1A0917015 Global

Mobil 1 ESP Formula ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexos2™ 0W-40 D20679HJ015 Global

Mobil 1 ESP x3 ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexos2™ 0W-40 D20682HJ015 Global
Dexos 2 covers both gas and diesel engines. The spec originally came about for European diesels for controlling ash load on the DPFs. Dexos2 oils then started to apply to European gas engines for emissions and gas DPFs in Europe (yes, some gas engines have particulate filters). Dexos2's first US appearance was the 2014 Cruze Diesel, and then made its way for the 2.8 Duramax in the Colorado/Canyon. Dexos2 oils contain typically 0.8% sulfated ash or less which is crucial to the life of emissions equipment.

GM using this in the performance 6.2 engines allows for street and track use without the need (unless noted like ZLE) for a higher ash content oil that if used frequently can lead to emissions component failure (cats, GDPF, DPF, etc.).

Interesting because the Mercedes webpage lists Castrol Edge as low SPAsh

After seeing this thread I ordered enough for an oil change (from the link in post #2). It shipped and arrived right away and I have the oil change completed. Thanks for the info.

If the oil isn't available through GM, there are other sources out there that sell it cheaper anyway. Don't stress over GM not having it!

I use Valvoline 5W30 full synthetic dexos 2 in my 2017 ZL1 and also in my 2005 Silverado truck with the 4.8 liter V8. It ain’t rocket science you know.

^ I've been running that for a while. I plan to try the Pennzoil Euro L platinum syn next as quite a few people on the net swear by it.

I think a lot of the reason for Dexos 2 is LSPI (low speed pre-ignition) protection, particularly an issue with Direct Injection Forced Induction motors like the LT4. From here:

https://myemail.constantcontact.com/...id=iD8Bl4jX1H8

Modern gasoline direct injected (GDI) engines are prone to damage from LSPI, so oil standards like API SN+ and GM Dexos2 have been introduced to provide protection from detonation at low speeds and high loads. LSPI occurs when engine oil infiltrates the combustion chamber and combusts before the ignition event. Changes include reduction of calcium detergents and elimination of sodium detergents, as well as increased Moly and other friction modifiers. Likewise, modern low-SAPS oils are designed with reduced anti-wear additives, like ZDDP, which can shorten catalyst life, or plug after treatment particulate filters. It is interesting that this new standard and the corresponding Mobil 1 C40 specification oil provides protection for these particulate filters, as it has been determined that gasoline direction injection engine or gasoline compression engines produce particulate matter in their exhaust, soot, like diesel engines, which poses a potential environmental issue. Remember, diesel engines have been legislated away and become less common due to the soot particulate matter they produce, so particulate filters have been added to many engines, and they are coming to gasoline engines now including some Porsche models.

Again, no engine oil additive is going to do jack for pre-ignition, which is related to quality of fuel, compression, boost, tuning, and, as that article indicates, oil (blowby) in the combustion chamber. The only fix for the latter is installing a catch can

According to the Mobil 1 engineers and chemists, LSPI which is different than standard PI/knock/detonation, occurs at low speed conditions under high load with DI engines, and LSPI is pre-ignition of the blow-by oil vapor itself and not the fuel, so higher octane fuel doesn't fix it. It's the chemistry of this Dexos 2 oil vapor (like the high octane chemistry of race gas), that resists ignition under high pressure, making it more effective for LSPI than standard oils.

It may not be the only cure for LSPI, but according to their data it helps prevent this engine damaging phenomenon. The more help the better IMO.

Their information is incorrect, as is a good bit of GM online part sellers can be.

Could that particular seller be out of stock? Could be. But the # is a valid and non-discontinued # in GM's system, and the GM authorized oil suppliers that provide a hefty list of quart/gallon/drum/bulk oils have stock as well.

The GM part number for 0-40 ESP is #19353135. I called a local dealer and got pricing recently. Tasca has it as well.

You may just need to call a few dealers. I found one locally who had plenty.
