In other news, I just registered for my first autocross! Going to Devens Airfiled, Ayer MA on May 20th. Anyone want to join? https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...country-049288 anything I need to know ahead of time?

I have also been checking HPDE, it's certainly more expensive than autocross ($50 vs $250+), so I'm holding off for now. Hopefully I can still do it this coming season. And Yes I understand in terms of drive time, HPDE is a much better value
Devens is an awesome venue for AutoX. I should be there on the 20th for NCR.

I originally bought my gear from HMS, but I bought a Simpson Helmet online. As mentioned, most groups have some loaner helmets including NCR. They are free with NCR.

motorsportreg.com is where to go for Deven events.

Both local Porsche clubs welcome non-Porsche brand cars. The BMW club and Miata will also let other cars in if they have room. Most require you to preregister. You have to unpack all of your loose gear. Your battery has to be bolted down tight, and your tires can't be corded, etc... They will do a safety inspection of your car before the event and check that your wheels are torqued and that you don't have any loose bodies in the trunk.

Typically, bring water, sun screen, a folding chair, a tire gauge, a tire pump, layered clothes this time of year, a hat, sunglasses, a go pro if you have one, comfortable sneakers with thin soles, rain gear just in case, a tarp to set your stuff on or a plastic bin, money for lunch ($5) or lunch, enough gas for the day, but not too much (1/2 tank or less), tape for your assigned numbers, research your car class before the event.

If you are new to this, I would suggest taking advantage of the free instructors. They can make your day enjoyable and safe.

HPDE is also a blast but you are looking at New Hampshire International and Lime Rock, etc... with some of the same clubs. Watkins Glen is great but it is much further out. On the positive side, it is a whole different type of rush. On the negative side, once you really get into HPDE, it is not only the cost of the events. You will burn through tires, brakes and other consumables much quicker given the speeds involved. You will also likely need track insurance since your typical State Farm policy does not cover this kind of thing. Not having insurance is fine where there is nothing to hit on an autoX course, but in HPDE, there are other cars, walls, deer, etc... You can risk not have track specific insurance when you are in Green group, but once you go solo in Red, Black, etc... more speed, more things can happen.

When I was running road courses many years ago, I don't think track insurance was a thing. I knew some people back then who wrecked some cars on road courses so the risk is very real. Track insurance sounds like a good idea for road course events.

Thanks MoreSpeed. Which car are you bringing on May 20th to Defense?

I think I will be holding off with HPDE for now due to costs, and risk. Good points about the track insurance.

I ended up getting this helmet for $139 off Amazon. Fits fine though it seems pretty big from the outside.

Added an additional HPDE event to my previous mentioned dates. Also doing the May 3rd Lapping "short day" at Palmer, would be a great time with some fellow forum members, lets align some schedules this season and nail down some track time! I had a pretty diverse weekend, tackled my rescheduled HPDE Friday w/rain on the last 1/2 my day, on Saturday had some fun in the sun watching some runs at N.E. Dragway (w/ Evil-Bee-NH), and today took in some Auto cross at Devens under the umbrella (watched a palmer instructor, and saw briefly DriverModJay w/his 1LE and his fellow "Maineiac" w/ a ZL1). Lets plan ahead and post your events ahead of time, and get some people together for some of this fun!

An anyone recommend a shop that can do an alignment with a spec I give, or even better if they can recommend a spec? I also don't want to go to any place down the street if they will abuse the car.

Looking for places in Massachusetts or RI. Hopefully not too far from Franklin where I live.

Thanks!

Most respectfully here, I would use the search function in the forum for this and read the through the "6th gen Camaro 1LE" and "Road Course/Track and Autocross" sections to gain a ton of track/performance set-up info. In short, refer to the 2018 Chevrolet performance supplement for specs and bring a copy with you to give to the alignment tech. I went to my dealer for my alignment. But there is other options out there, and consider a package deal for future alignments.

Weather looks good for tonight's Street Night... I plan on heading up, and think wnta1ss is also. This Friday looks like it may stay dry for a full day of Lapping at Palmer. Anyone else heading to Palmer Motorsports on Fri?

My first autocross yesterday was a lot of fun! Very nice meeting you MoreSpeed! Great looking ZL1. I was manning the cones when you were driving - the sound that car makes is ridiculous!

I highly recommend autocross to everyone! Hopefully I'll be able to make it out there again this season.

Check these guys out. The corvette club keeps the numbers down to give you a lot of runs. Typically 6/8 in the morning session and the same in the afternoon. For $50 it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on. And the guys are great. Loaner helmets provided too.

Good to know - thanks!

Unfortunately I'm out of town that weekend of June 16th. But on their website it looks like they are holding events on August 14th (that's a Tuesday though, typo?) and September 2nd as well. Might be able to make one of those. http://www.baystatecorvetteclub.com/...ss_Events.html
