2019 stock ZL1 vs 2019 2SS with a Procharger

Ok, I let my buddy barrow my Z for a day to check it out. He now wants one pretty bad.

He's found a 2019 Z bone stock with 25k miles on it for 55k and a 2019 2SS with Headers, Exhaust and DX-1 Procharger and 15k miles for 46k.

He thinks the 2SS is a better builder for an 800whp+ project. I don't agree, I think the Z is a better long term builder with all the extra for stopping and suspension.

So, I am coming here to prove him wrong.

So long as the SS has a built bottom end (rods and pistons) to go along with that, I'd encourage him to get that instead.

It does not, just the mods I listed, and he'll be using it for driver and quarter mile car.

Yeah he’s gonna need to build the bottom end on the SS. I’ve got an 18SS with a D1SC and it’s putting 603hp to the wheels. Pro charger can easily get it to 800 not sure about the ZL1 SC.

Plus I LOVE the way the pro charger sounds. If it’s quarter mile and not track I’d go the SS.

Tell your friend, you are right and he is wrong.

The DX-1 is the higher end ProCharger capable of 200+hp gains just not on a stock bottom end. The P1-C is the economy friendly limited to about 180 hp gain. The ZL1 rear end is designed to handle up to 1000 hp. The SS rear end is notoriously weak at 650+ rwhp, and he'll end up putting in a ZL1 rear end anyways. Now factor in the fuel system upgrade as well. If you have a SC the fuel system should have been upgraded but if not another $2000, $5000 for the rear end, and $3000 for the drop ins. There's your cost for $46K vs $55K

The ZL1 stock with FBO and tuned transmission = a track/drag strip monster.

And now knowing the bottom end wasn't upgraded with the Super Charger... that's a resounding hell no from me. He's going to throw a rod, blow a piston, or thrash a Ring long before he gets to 800rwhp to say nothing about the rear end. Even more so since he plans to take the car to the strip.

As an example: JLSpeed on youtube blew his axle on a stock C8 with street tires. What do you think 800rwhp is going to do to that stock SS rear end?

I haven't heard of anyone installing a ZL1 diff in an SS. The ZL1 uses an electronic differential, which no doubt includes a couple extra modules that are in turn controlled by the transmission or body control modules that are also probably different than their SS counterparts. I've seen several ZL1 diffs and even complete rear cradle assemblies listed in the member classifieds for very reasonable prices. If this were truly anything close to a bolt in swap, I'd probably pick one up for my SS. I may be wrong, but I sincerely doubt this swap is in any way simple or inexpensive. Also, the mechanical lsd in the SS doesn't appear to be particularly fragile.

If that's the case, then tell him to use the money saved between the two vehicles to knock that out and still get the SS. In this instance, I don't see the value in getting the ZL1.

ZL1 is a much better platform to build off of to start especially for the HP he's seeking. Strongly recommend he goes that route. Shit id consider selling my 1LE for that ZL1. $55k with only 25k miles is a steal!!
