1500 mile break in ?????? Really
Was 500 on my 2010. This seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Is anybody following religiously to 1500. Also got an oil change on my last after 1500 miles, is that recommended still.

Not religiously, but I'm not beating on it either. This past weekend on the highway was the hardest I drove it and it was for a very short while. Still got about 700miles to go
I'm a nut about oil changes, so yeah, it's going in at around 1500 for its first with 5k changes (full synth) after that. |

I didn’t follow it religiously. I probably hit 5000-5500 rpm a few times before 1500miles. I did take it easy for about 500 miles.

I definitely took it “easier” than normal the first 1500 miles. Did a few WOT pulls from 2-5krpms and let off quickly to create max vacuum to set the rings the first drive out after purchase (even though this is likely done at the factory). Then did all city easy driving varying load and RPMs the first 500 miles. Changed oil. Took it fairly easy after that until 1500 miles. Changed oil again. Now I rarely drive it without at least one WOT pull!

I blew a shift and probably hit 6000 RPM during my test drive. Of course it’s a little less concerning with an OHC engine.
Definitely change the oil early. |

Just change the oil before you start romping on it. I'd baby it for the first 500, change the oil, then go ham.

Here is the consensus as far as I can tell. The ring seating is done at the factory and there's nothing you can do to change that. You can't make the rings seat better by doing acceleration/deceleration cycles. They already did that. The rings are seated. Beyond that, you are basically taking it easy while the parts break in. A few hundred miles, should be good. There are mechanics on here that have said the 1500 mile break in is too long, and from what I've seen, a 500 mile break in period is sufficient, but you do have to vary the RPMs. 500 highway miles in 8th gear at 1000rpm may not be an adequate break-in. Perhaps this is why Chevy recommends 1500?

Bought mine as a CPO with 900 miles. Took it easy on the 200 mile ride home, after that is was 6-8 0-60 passes on a industrial back road. Lol
There is no need to wait 1500 miles to break in a engine. As the poster above mentioned, the rings are already seated from the factory. Log 500 miles, change oil, and let it eat!

When I test drove a ZL1 A10, the sales guy said to romp on it and I suspect that is common practice so most cars with some miles are probably driven hard already. I suspect that with the high HP cars nowadays, the mfg suggested 1500 mile breakin period is probably as much to get the driver accustomed to the power and handling of the car as it is to breakin the engine and other systems.

St. Catherines in Canada builds our Camaro LT1s. Only the LT1s in Vettes come from Tonawanda. I found this out later. As for break in it's up to the owner. I impatiently waited 24 years to get my 1st SS Camaro, I wanted one since I was 17, and could finally buy one in my 40s, so yeah I followed break in. I also did first oil change at 500 mi, not 1500. And I still change every 3-4K, I don't care what the computer sensor says.

Did the 1500 mile on mine took about 7 month to get to that point but I did as GM requested.
