Need suggestions for rear drag wheels / tires

Hi all. As the title states I'm looking for some opinions on a budget friendly rear drag setup. You can see my mods in my signature. I want something that won't be too far off of the height of my front wheels (285/30/20). I'm not sure if a DR or slicks is the way to go. I want traction at the strip, my 305/30/20 Michelin PS4s are not going to bite, at least not in first gear. Also don't want to be snapping my stock axles either.

I saw another thread with drag star bracket racers which seem like a reasonable cost, but I still don't know where to go with the tire size and if a DR is ok or if I will need slicks.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

-Phil

Sorry for the ignorant question but what is the major difference between the drag radial and a slick? Just sticker?

I'm curious. What would break if using a DR and not break if using a Slick?

Anyone have a link to the correct offset and whatnot for those drag stars? I want to finally order them and seem to have a hard time figuring out which the right ones are

I believe you'll get more sidewall flex and better launches with slicks and that seems to work better with M6 cars. If A8, go with DR.

slicks has more sidewall flex for the initial "hit" from a manual car, slick is also less likely to wheelhop like a drag radial, wheel hop snaps axles, the cushion the sidewall flex provides is a lot easier on driveline parts in a m6 car.

17x9.5 race stars and 28x10 hoosiers as slow has said. I have a A8 with this setup and have over 100 runs on the Hoosiers. Slicks do not shock the drive train as a drag radial will and you'll end up with broken drivetrain parts. I've been there with a M6 corvette, the softer sidewall on a slick allows softer launches when you dead hook.

Using bias-ply tires on the back with radials on the front is probably not a recommended combination due to handling problems. Since you want to use your 285 radials on the front, something to think about.

Everyone says that the slicks are better for an M6.....my car didn't agree. 2900 miles, Hoosier 28x10 slicks, and a good launch.....I ended up trailering my car to the dealer for an axle.....

It was 100% stock until it came back from the dealer.

My next set of tires are going to be 305/45r17's and radials up front on skinnies.

If radials hit harder then my axle snapping slicks, I can't wait to test the GForce lifetime warranty!

Not as big of an issue as one would think.....I do it. Stockers up front and Hoosiers out back. It dances a bit. The old adage of not mixing bias ply and radial was meant for the same axle. Don't put a radiator on the right side and a bias ply on the left. That will kill a diff, and potentially cause stability issues.

Thank you guys for the information. But based on the feedback I am more torn now than I was before haha. Here is what I am about to order, after I decide between the two tires.

Race star 17x9.5 (does a 6 offset work or does it need to be the 6.43 or whatever? I can get the 6 offset cheaper and sooner than the other).

Hoosier slick 28x10 OR 305/45/17 MT ET street R.
