That thread didn't pop up with the search terms I was using. Even if it did, the title doesn't seem to relate. Otherwise I may have already been using the Motul oil. I did later see this thread and shared my information with the community in Post #74.

I'll have to compare Motul specs with the Amsoil blend now, to decide which to use. Anyway, my point was that GM dropped the ball in making their required lubricants available to their customers. The effort I expended searching for oil was rewarded with additional knowledge of these lubricants so I don't regret it at all. Again, I'm glad to see there are alternatives.

Here comes a rookie question that I have searched for an answer.

We know 5w30 for daily and 0w40/5w40 for tracking. I know it is not good to mix the oils and the filter will still have some in it.

If you change that much oil out, will it be reusable and would you if it was?

I change the filter every time I change oil so there will be only minor drippage in the oil sump when you put the new oil in.

I don't change back to 5W-30 after track days. I just use the 5W-40 and change it and filter about every 500 miles because I use my ZL1 primarily to/from/at track with occasional leisure driving. The 0W-40 and 5W-40 can be left in for daily driving. If you don't go to the track much you can probably get 2000 miles or more on it. I judge the oil by its color when I drain it. Light brown is okay but dark brown or excessive metal filings means you waited too long. The HP Supplement only requires changing back if you use the 50 weight oils for racing.

I would never recommend re-using oil after it's been drained from the sump. You can pick up all kinds of contaminants from the drain pan, funnel, rags, etc. Exposure to the air also makes it absorb more moisture, which degrades the oil over time. Only thing I've done with old oil is to load my little pump oiler can that I use for squeeky cart wheels and door hinges.

Would you guys recommend the 5/40 for year round down here in deep south tx over the 5/30?? I will likely only track once or twice a year I'm guessing due to the distance I have to go to hit a road course.

This is not a daily driver & guessing I will only put 4k-5k miles per year...limited to 6k on the Ins & more than enough.

Our winters are really mild & it hardly ever even freezes...hell, we will be in the 100's this weekend & looking at 60-70's for the norm in winter. If it gets below that, it is rarely for 24-48 hours. Seems to me, the 5/40 is a logical choice even if I didn't track at all. Thoughts??

Yeah, I'd go with the 5W-40 Dexos 2 oil. You definitely want the higher viscosity if your going to run it at road tracks at all, especially in South TX. When you get home from your track visit, let it cool then drain a small sample into a mason jar. If it's not dark or have lots of suspended particles, just top it off 'til next time.

The HP Supplement also recommends changing the rear differential oil after each track visit. Depending on how hard you dive into the turns, you may also want to think about using a higher grade brake fluid. See this thread for more:
Track Event with Stock Brake Fluid

If you read the owner's manual, the two alternatives to the Dexos 2 oils are the Mobil 1 ESP and Valvoline Synpower MST. This is for the SS, not sure if the ZL1 reads differently, but I doubt it.

6.2L (LT1) Engine
Change the engine oil to 0W-40 or
5W-40 that meets the dexos2™
specification. If this oil is not
available, the following oils can be
used as an alternative: Valvoline®
SYNPOWER MST 5W-40, Mobil® 1
ESP Formula M 5W-40. See

Yeah I read it. The ZL1/1LE High Performance Supplement reads a little different but my point is the same. The alternative is not satisfactory. If I'm going to race this car I want to use the proper lubricants. The car's design specs need the Dexos 2 lubricants to perform properly. If they require Dexos 2 it should have been available by the time vehicles were delivered, period.

This stuff any good?

I saw throughout this thread that Castrol was rated pretty good overall, but there are so many types under each brand it's hard to know if it is still a true statement for each type.

Castrol 03057 GTX Magnatec 5W-30

Probably OK for Dexos1 use. I wouldn't run it if you track your car, though.

If it says Dexos 1, and it's 5W-30 weight...it's good for street use.

Hmmm, cool thanks! Another thing that had me doubting is it's $17.88 for 5-quarts on Amazon right now.

I'm looking in to an online purchase of some of the known Dexos2 5w-40 blends but the stock image photos of these oils aren't displaying the Dexos2. Is that only because the brand later became Dexos2 and it is safe to purchase, or do we think there was a change in the formula that allowed it to become Dexos2, and previous stock leftover won't be satisfactory.

I'm thinking it's all fine based on reading Dexos is just a stamp of approval, and not a display of an oil's grade. I just wanted to verify my thinking first.
