Square Road Course Setup - Thoughts

I have a square set of 19 X 10 MRR 716's that were previously used for winter in Alabama, while I used the stock 20's for summer and track use. I'm now in CA, so I was thinking about repurposing the wheels as a dedicated track setup with either 295/35 Michelin Pilot SC2's or 285/35 GYR F1 3R's.

To date I've run stock size 285 & 305 GYR F1 3's for track duty and they've worked great.

Interested in thoughts on this setup, especially regarding the slightly narrower rear tire, and / or opinions on the SC2's.

Really like the idea of a square track day setup to allow rotations. I currently get 2 weekends from a set of fronts and 4 from a set of rears.

There are a number of folks that run the square setup with APEX wheels 19x11s. Great way to save on $ for tires by rotating them up front. The fronts will always wear out faster than the rears.

I looked into this and learned that the MRR 716s are not a good track wheel due to the low quality metallurgy--they will bend easily.

Also, running 10" wheels is pretty narrow for this heavy car and a set of 4 SC3R 285s will probably not be enough rubber for decent lap times.

Last, I tried running PSC2 on my ZLE and they were a terrible tire for me--lap times were ~6-7 seconds slower than slightly used SC3R or Pirelli DH after only 1-2 sessions. A better driver than me may be able to get more out of them, but I heard the same feedback about PSC2 from some good ZL1 drivers.

Do it. 10 is narrow but you can run a Toyo R888R on it in 295/30R19 and put down great laps. I always switch to a square setup as I'm not trying to break records and enjoy the extra life I get from my tires. I own Apex 19x10.5 and an off-brand 19x10 I use for track days. I have 305 on the apex and 295 on the off-brand. Lap times are similar.

I'm very eager to see if someone with a ZL1 can put down great laps with R888R in 295/30R19 square in 10 (or 11) inch wheels.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if this is possible, and if so I might switch to R888R due to the relatively thick tread and extra track life these tires could provide.

Based on my prior experience with R888, and what I've read from ZL1 drivers on R888R, I don't think great ZL1 lap times are possible on R888R in 295 square, or even 305 front/325 rear (or wider if they fit).

Something about the ZL1 and tires, it's a very finicky car.

Decided I’m going to keep using the square setup for daily and put GYR 3R’s on the stock 20’s. Seems like a more consistent setup.

Going down to 19's with a forged wheel saved ten lbs per corner. That is a lot of unsprung weight to save. Tires are lighter than bigger wheels. Whether you go wider or narrow, it should be better on 19's.

If you're looking for more affordable 19s in 11" and 12" it seems like Apex ARC 8 are the best deal.
