SAFETY GEAR?

What type safety gear is required to drag race? I know its a very vague question; however i did some research prior to this post and all i could find was snell 2015 approved helmet. Does it have to be full face model? Driving gloves, seat belts, fireproof jacket? You guys get the picture. I have yet to be able to make it to my local 1/8 mile track. I can't wait to launch it!!!

It depends on the track and how fast you go. My local tracks will allow you to run with no equipment at all with my car and even ones running 9s. I ran at a couple of events in Bowling Green that didn't require me to use anything but a helmet that they didn't check, then went to LS Fest there, and was told if I ran faster than 11.5 in the quarter, that I needed a 2010 up approved helmet and a fire jacket. My helmet was too old and I didn't have a jacket, so I found a couple nice guys that let me borrow their helmet and jacket to get through tech, then only wore my helmet during my runs, and no one said anything. So the event organizers may also have different rules from what the track will normally allow.

I would say at least get a helmet. I think you can run open or closed face, but I'd recommend a closed face. You can leave your visor up for air. A fire jacket would be the next item to get in case you need it. The best thing to do would be check with guys that run at your track with a similar car.

I have never been to a track that enforced stricter than NHRA rules, with the few exceptions of dumb techs who didnt know the difference between a street tire and a slick.

If you want to meet the rules, you should plan on getting a Snell SA2015 helmet and an SFI racing jacket. The stock car easily needs the helmet due to the ETs it can run, and adding the supercharger requires the racing jacket. Whether these rules are enforced or not depends as previously mentioned on the track personnel where you go.

Chris, we live pretty close to each other. I'm guessing that you are going to go to Emerald Coast. As far as safety equipment goes I always say that it is better to be safe than sorry. Our track is very good on tech inspections, But go too fast and you better have the minimums. If you like I have some stuff you can borrow. Let me know when you go to the track and could help out and introduce you to guys there.
