Leak in Gas Tank. Dangerous?

The dealer says I have a small crack in the gas tank near the fuel pump that's causing the occasional smell of fumes outside the car. They say it's not dangerous or essential if I don't mind the occasional smell. They want $2000 to replace the fuel tank!

Is it really safe? Should I see if it can be patched rather than replaced?

How could they tell without dropping the tank? Put a fire extinguisher in the car.

Light a match

Seriously though if your car was a few years newer you could probably get it covered under the 7 year emissions warranty.

Try to keep it 3/4 full or so and see if the smell persists.

I'm wondering if I still can get the factory to cover it. Maybe a service bulletin was issued? I only intermittently smell it and it's minor but I can tell it's not coming from the cap. But also it can't be smelled inside the car.

I don't trust this dealership they're thieves. They are charging me $419 for a shifter linkage replacement. Someone else said it cost them $189.

Have they dropped the fuel tank at all? They wouldn't have to pull it complete to access the top of the tank, but it would take some work to get to the top.

I would bet it's emissions equipment related unless the car has been wrecked.

It looks like new tanks are about $600 but if it is actually cracked it likely could be hot welded.

I doubt they dropped the tank. They claim they can't even start the car yet because it needs a linkage cable.

If you are planning to keep the car i would do the trap door thing so you could do a visual. Long term the trap door will come in handy anyway.

Crack? No, maybe a leaking fuel pump seal tho.

Anyone else notice everythings 2k for repairs with these cars?

Sure, do the trap door thing. If cutting into the floor doesn't ignite the gas leak, you can count on the O2 coming in through gaps in the rap door.

Plenty of videos on the 'tube showing how to do it.
Common practice on many cars.

That's what the dealer said. I doubt they dropped the tank.
