You should be able to run it on 87 without too many issues. I'm not sure what's going on there.

Does the OP need to worry about engine damage putting a tank of 87 octane and driving the car hard? Detonation? In the description it actually sounds like audible detonation was occurring.

Winkchris, was the car going into limp mode? Low power output? Did you get any check engine lights?

I read this before asking. I don't put low octane fuel in a car when it requires premium.

I'm obviously not a mechanic or an engineer. I know that cars are smart enough to pull timing and that they have knock sensors to help prevent damage.

Educate please.

A lot of people used 87 in their 5th Gen SS (not me) and I've never heard if it causing damage. I guess anything is possible, but I'd say almost impossible after just a couple of tankfuls, especially since the dealer fill is usually 87.

The good ol days he was 7 or 8 yrs old. lol The whole thing sounds odd to me. No others have similar complaints. All on one car with very little miles but yet he loves the car. Dunno, maybe it is just me and my spidey senses gettin to me.
, after reading the first post, my face did this

The LT1 is a "premium recommended" not a "premium required" engine. The computer can sense if 87 is used and will pull timing without harming the engine. Most "required" engines also do this now, but they'll run like shit as well as reducing performance.

You do know Chevy has a 1500 mile break in period on these cars. You said you have 2000 miles and "drive it like you stole it"
...

I think that answers why you have so many "problems"

Wind noise more???.........not in mine, much quieter than my 2012 SS..

Good luck!!

dealer filled my tank with 87 and audible detonation was easily heard low speed laying on the throttle any time any performance was extracted. It was loud. I drove it 200 miles home almost all freeway, put 93 in it. all noises and strange behavior went away. Premium is required IMO, detonation is bad and no the ECU did not fix it. I own a m6.
