Does the OP need to worry about engine damage putting a tank of 87 octane and driving the car hard? Detonation? In the description it actually sounds like audible detonation was occurring.

Winkchris, was the car going into limp mode? Low power output? Did you get any check engine lights?

A lot of people used 87 in their 5th Gen SS (not me) and I've never heard if it causing damage. I guess anything is possible, but I'd say almost impossible after just a couple of tankfuls, especially since the dealer fill is usually 87.

The LT1 is a "premium recommended" not a "premium required" engine. The computer can sense if 87 is used and will pull timing without harming the engine. Most "required" engines also do this now, but they'll run like shit as well as reducing performance.

dealer filled my tank with 87 and audible detonation was easily heard low speed laying on the throttle any time any performance was extracted. It was loud. I drove it 200 miles home almost all freeway, put 93 in it. all noises and strange behavior went away. Premium is required IMO, detonation is bad and no the ECU did not fix it. I own a m6.
