Weak start with hot engine

My starter sounds very weak and barely cranks when the engine is hot. There is no problem when the engine is cold. Last time I left it with dealer and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. I remember my 88 Mustang was doing this and it was a starter problem. Anyone else encounter this in their SS? So far the dealer has done nothing about my noisy rear and the weak start. I think I'm going to try a different dealer.

Mine has done this for quite some time now too but I haven't taken it to the dealer for it yet. It's a pain with my schedule to get to the dealer. There have been times after shutting it off after say a 45 min drive, then cranking it back up 5-7 min later, that it nearly won't turn over at all. But thank God even when it does it really bad it eventually still does turn over. Seems like starter heat soak maybe?

Mine does this between auto-x runs but has never NOT started so seems to be pretty normal.

I've experienced the exact same occurrences with my Corvette and NSX, so no worries.

happens to me as well ... slow crank when engine is warm. I figure it is still under warranty so I don't worry about it.

Would Victory Layne install? Do you recommend? Have the same issue...on very rare occasions...

It's a non-factory part, so probably not. If you speak to the service manager he may do it.

This heat shield should help the problem and extend starter life.

Exhaust is baking that poor thing.

Installation? Not sure - general auto repair shop, performance shop, anyone with a lift you would trust. Be sure they lift it properly (google site search).

This was a complaint in one of the car mags - when they reviewed it against a m4.

Hold the start button for a few seconds before engaging the clutch. See if that helps. Appears to do so for me.

Could this be a fuel pump priming issue? Don't think it's the starter.

This is not a normal condition. it's called heat soak and it can cost you if you don't get it taken care of while under warranty.

you can google it, but heat soak happens when a car sits for a short time after being driven. the solenoid absorbs heat from the engine block, exhaust manifold, and even hot pavement under the car.

when the solenoid becomes heat soaked, it gains resistance and the battery won't turn the starter. This can damage the battery, negative lead to the solenoid, the starter, and related components including the fuse block on a 6th gen.

Typical cost to repair is over $1,000.

Get it checked out while under warranty. There is a class action lawsuit pending and they need more people to come forward who have experienced this problem. google it and you'll see it documented everywhere.
