Crushed pipe section

I could have sworn I read on here that the crushed pipe section doesn't have any negative effects on preformance but also just read on a product description that horsepower is picked up if I buy a anti-crimp section...are they full of it? Does getting rid of the crimp affect the exhaust sound in a noticeable way?

This is probably what you remember from the site side of things. Regarding picking up HP...I'd be skeptical of any real benefit without before and after dyno charts...

I don't think anyone on the site has any verifiable gains by just removing the crimped section. If they do, and I'm mistaken, I'd love to read it.

Go to Mishimoto exhaust thread. They did a test and no effect. It is such a short section of pipe. We had a similar thing on the 2005-6 GTO - a crimped section- and before after testing replacing it showed no effect. Its probably for clearenace for rear axle cradle.

I would suspect it *may* cause restriction when going forced induction, but at that point the entire exhaust system is probably getting restrictive. Would be interesting to see somebody test the theory!

Maybe someone with a MY 17 ZL1 can chime in. It would be interesting to see if they have the crush pipe section as well.

I do not plan on doing anything substantial to the car...already has a lot of power for the street; which is pretty much the only place she will be.

Somebody posted the ZL1 has a 3" exhaust? Even with a crimp, that is a lot more flow. I pretty sure the header is the same on the ZL1 and SS, also the exhaust manifold is the same LT1 to LT4 on the Vette. I'm going by pictures. The ID of the SS header is 2.1" and has a lot more energy that the 2 and 3/4 crimped section at about 1/2 the flow area as a circle.

If it has 3inch exhaust it is either going to be crazy loud or have pretty intense resonators/muffler. My nonmuffler 2.75 is quieter than the 3inch gibson. But the gibson also got rid of the secondary cats which might be part of the sound discrepancy.

I would not worry about that section of pipe.

The exhaust is really done assisting with power at that point.

I am putting my old system back on and saw that piece for $100ish and it says it drops 10lbs and adds 10hp so I figured why not since the system was already off the car. But if it isn't going to do anything I'll just keep it the way it is.

Interesting.....It certainly won't remove 10 lbs, either!

If you replace it with another (non-crimped pipe)...you're still replacing a small section of pipe with another, equal section of pipe...and thus weight. Crimping doesn't add material.

Oh, sales tactics...

EDIT: I guess the product might save weight...if it was made of tin-foil....

I have not modded that portion of my exhaust yet (shear laziness). I would just heat, slide hammer, and braze the holes... basically free in less than hour.
