As for OnStar, I don't see the value it provides as being worth much of anything. Maybe someone can explain to me where the value is, because I'm not seeing it.
The main value I see is crash notification, safety assist with location (flat tires, etc), and easy ability to track vehicle in the remote app. Also, I get an insurance discount for having it active. The nav features seem worthless, since your phone or built-in nav works better, but you don't have to subscribe to the navigation service tier. The basic protection plan runs $10/month if you catch a promo and renew for a year. I think I save that much in insurance, so it's worth it to me.

That would have been my next question - how much of an insurance discount does one get? If the insurance savings equals the cost of OnStar, that's pretty cool.

Talked about this exact thing with a friend yesterday who is a business dev manager here for BMW's "ConnectedDrive Experience" or somesuch, and he says this push is coming from Germany, he tried to resist hard telling them several ways how this pay-after-first-year model wouldn't fly in the US market, so far in vain.

My insurance gives me $190 a year discount enough to pay for onstar so I may as well get it if not I’d have to give the insurance company the $190 a year. The discount depends on miles a year driven, and how you drive , hard breaking if you wear your seatbelt, hard acceleration etc. onstar sends that to your insurance company and that determines your discount.

I don't think I'd make it more than a week without being cancelled.

I never used onstar since I got my car. I hate it when you get those occasional onstar commercials even when your just moving your car from one spot to the other.
