Screw in tire

Hey Guys,

I've had my zl1 1le for about 300 miles now and while wiping it down this evening I noticed a screw in my rear tire. I played with it a bit and the screw fell out. It was only about an inch long. I tested to make sure no air was leaking and it appears fine, but it still concerns me. Anyone have experience with this?

Surprised it did t go through if it was an inch long. That’s almost a miracle. I’d still check it again before driving it. You’re probably ok for street driving.

Following this thread, I bought insurance on my wheels and tires for this same reason. I was told that the stock tire on ZLE may not do well after a patch.

I drive my car with a plug in 3 of the tires for 4000 miles. one of them was at the edge of the sidewall.

I wouldn't trust it to hold air long term. Better to change the tire now, while you only have 300 miles and little tread wear, than if it fails later, and you have to buy two rear tires so you don't get excessive differential wear.

Do you really want to find out what a blow out is like at a freeway speed? These tires don't have much volume, it will be quick.

I had the same near side wall damage it was about a 1/4 size hole. Discount tire or NTB won't touch when it gets that close to the edge they become Moran's I say this because not all situations or damage are the same they just do what they are told with out even thinking! get it patched from the inside from a LLANTAS TIENDA.. mexican tire shop!

Discount will allow you to add road hazard even if you didn't buy the tires from them. Park with it on the screw down so they can't see it!

Go back a week or so later and pay poquito dinero claiming it!

Also these guys are Retards on what will fit your car and max load of tires.. for some reason they go by what's listed vs doing the math ( Your cars weight divided by 4 to see if the 1 tire on 1 side is within specs)

I like how easy everyone wants to spend your money. I suggest you just monitor the tire pressure closely for a while. It is likely the screw did not penetrate the tire's inner structure. With it way out on the edge like that the screw was not under as much load to do serious damage versus if it was in the middle of the tire.

I had a screw in a tire just like that. Did what you did (pulled it out) and the tire lasted just as long as the other three. And this was with a brand new Nitto 315 on my previous gen 5 Camaro and I drove that car hard.

If there is no appreciable loss of pressure over the next few drives - then move on and enjoy life. If you are going to track the car with regularity then you might want to be more cautions but for street driving (spirited or not) - I would roll with it.

My C6ZR1 had a patch on one of the rear tires (new ones waiting in the garage) for thousands of miles. My investigation into whether to replace it or not suggests that it will be fine if you don't track you car and even then, most guys are not up to getting 80% out of their rides when on the track.

Damage on your tire looks superficial and doesn't appear to have broken the casing. But, to be clear, you need to tell us how much of the 1" was visible.
