best HP pickup for a grand

Thanks to COVID I have all kinds of time on my hands but the budget has taken a wallop. Been looking at pretty much everything to get a little more smile when I hit the go pedal. Not afraid of wrenching on my own but working with only a grand, I am trying to squeeze every pony I can out of my swear jar cash.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The car is almost bone stock and has 80k of (s)miles on it now.

Thanks.

For a grand, I'd say a nitrous system for best HP gains.

Yeah I've been looking hard at the kits. I read about space issues for the bottle in the convertible and when you add the tune I think I'm a bit outside my budget. But it would be close. I need to find a good timer around Atlanta and get the cost. I also read about the timing issue. I dont know if a kit a controller and a tune would fit in the budget. I might have to swear more so I can stuff more cash in the jar...!

Biggest hp gains for a grand would have to be nitrous.

Are you auto or man trans? Either way 3.91 gears. Nice and simple. Not a HP gain but definitely an excitement gain.

Are you manual or automatic? If automatic then I would agree with Frank. A tune will make a massive difference to your car, even without any mods the transmission tune alone will wake the hell out of that car - all the time, not just when you push the button. If you go with DynoSteve for the handheld programmer and tune then any mods you make after the tune will be updated for no additional charge.

If we are strictly talking about gains vs the dollar then I agree the nitrous is the best bang for the buck of course, but what about tuning required for timing changes on the bottle? I know little about nitrous setups so this is an honest question.

That was one of the directions I was looking. I have wanted to stop the AFM and a tuner would do that but it's almost 1/2 my budget. After extensive reading here and other places a good Tune and CAI would be a good start. Read alot about Dynosteve. I'm here in central Alabama, I like road trips but wasn't sure it would be the result I wanted.

Thanks for the input.
