Here is the Auto 0-60. Wow that is quick.
I've driven manual tranny cars since I could drive and swore I would NEVER get an auto pony/muscle car. I was on the fence with the 6th gen but this video has convinced me that this is the tranny to have now. There is no longer the excuse that a manual is superior to an automatic at all. And with paddle shifters, you can get almost as much control as you can with the manual.

I'm loving this 0-60 vid. Car looks wicked fast but now it's got me wondering about the LT1.

We know the LT1 makes incredible torque from 2,000-4,000 RPM's. However, the engine is only within this 2k-4k range for about 1.5 seconds in the video. Most of the time is spent at or above 5,000 when the engine is WOT where the LT1 doesn't perform quite as well. Makes me think, is this the best engine for this gearing/8-speed transmission combo?

Could a 6-speed auto with taller gears and a slightly lower rev limit (to keep the engine in a better torque range) perform better?

Torque gets you there, horsepower keeps you there

Or it could be a really efficient drivetrain 10% loss would give 405 at the wheels, 450 at the crank. I don't know if 10% is realistic or not, if not you are right, or it's a ringer.

wait wait, they are saying 455 HP on the SS...that would be a 89.2% efficiency rating.

I love it.

Clearly some people are blind to the sarcasm font...

I'm thinking with the NPP, it would be 460hp. So it's about a 12% loss. This would put it right at the same loss as the GT as its 435hp has about 380-385whp.

The 0-60 vid seems to have shut them up.

Short answer: horsepower matters more than torque. Doesn't matter how much torque you make, or at what rpm you make it at ... you are going to want to keep the engine as close as possible to its power peak for maximum acceleration

Horsepower moves a car, not torque. You need torque and rpm to make horsepower. Yes the LT1 makes good low end torque, but at 2000 rpm it is only making about 150HP. Not very useful. The LT1 makes peak horsepower at 6000 rpm. The longer you can keep the engine at or near peak horsepower, the faster you will go.

Mid range Torque is very useful when the car is a manual and you are running around a race course. When running 0-60 or 1/4 mile, not as much as peak HP.

As far as horsepower vs torque goes...

“You know, a lot of people buy horsepower, when what they really want is torque,”

“Torque is what gets you to the speed you want quickly; horsepower is what keeps you there.”

"Horsepower sells engines and cars. But torque moves the car." - Kevin McClelland, Flowmaster Mufflers

"It takes torque to get a car moving." - Dick Miller, Dick Miller Racing

Wow. I went back to check up on the progress since the 0-60 was posted. Dr. Pill has taken far too much of his own medicine. That dude is truly crazy, delusional, and needs some psychiatric help. I don't care if he shouldn't be mentioned here. There is something wrong with that guy. He is certifiably insane.
