OBD port ALWAYS hot.

So I installed my dash cam (Aukey DR02) and did not want to run it with the plug in 12v as that would expose wires and leave me without that plug if I needed to plug in anything else... my solution? OBD port adapter. All my wires are hidden and everything works great, EXCEPT... it is ALWAYS on.

I do NOT want to remember to unplug and plug in my camera every time I get in or out. Is there anyway I can switch some fuses around or do something so my OBD port is not drawing power when the vehicle is off?

You don't want dash cam to record while the car is off? just in case someone damage your car and takes off.

While i was dining in, I had some one backed into one of my vehicles and took off. If the dash cam wasn't on, I would've never found out who did it.

I MIGHT try to use the motion sense feature, but going back through my footage, when the car is off and parked it takes a ton of tiny clips all the time even when nothing is happening.

I normally park it in the garage but there are times when I leave my car a few days at a time and dont want to come back to a dead battery because the dash cam was recording everything and I forgot to unplug it. Thats my only issue.

I'd be surprised if a dash cam was able to drain a car battery after only a few days to the point where you couldn't start your car, but even if it can I'd not be messing with the wiring to the OBD connector. It's purposely set to have 12V all the time for certain diagnostic functions when scan tools are plugged in.

I'd think you'd be better off to either make your own switch that goes inline somewhere between the adapter you bought and the camera, or find a different 12V source to tap into that's only on when the vehicle is on like rearview mirror power or something like that.

Well that makes me feel a little better. My other option was taking the original USB it came with, cutting it open and running the wires to the fuse box. Then I could return the $20 OBD port adapter. I just wish AUKEY would sell a direct hard wire kit.

Yeah, that sounds like a better plan. Might even be able to find a kit that lets you tap into a fuse box or something with a female USB port on the other end if you don't want to take up the USB slot in the center console with it. That way you still have the original USB connection available if you want to use that or sell the camera later.

I would be down for a kit that attached a USB to a fuse. Let me know if you find anything like that.

I know this is an older toic but I recently bought a dash cam and OBD micro usb power cable. The camera won't stay on more than 5-10 minutes while driving and the switch that it has for always having the camera on, only keeps it on for about 5 minutes after shutting the car down. May be a good prob to have but why does it power off even while driving? Bad cable? I tried it with a usb cable to a usb port in the car and all was good but I don't like where I'd have to run the usb cable to in my 2023 Camaro.
