Custom axle back from exhaust shop?

Hi all,

I know I want more noise than the stock lt1 non npp exhaust. There is just not much there. I am considering the borla s type. I’m also considering just taking it to our exhaust shop and giving them the reigns.

It’s worth noting this isn’t a normal muffler shop. The local Ford roush dealer sends their Roush f150s to this place for custom exhaust work. They’re fairly priced and they’ve done good maintenance work for me before.

Curious if anyone else has gone this route.

Well, I didn't go to any fancy roush exhaust shop, but an exhaust shop did make me a "custom" axle back. Basically had the non npp suitcase muffler removed and 2 mandrel bent pipes welded from the rear cats to the factory single tips. Costs $100 and worked out great.

800 for two mufflers just makes my head hurt, and thats one of the cheapest ones. I just want to hear the exhaust echo off the buildings instead of the DI system -_-

It is totally subjective. Cold start is loud, warm idle is quiet, light throttle is quiet. Cruising is pretty quiet, I can have a conversation with a passenger without raising my voice. Stereo can be heard over the exhaust crusing even at half volume. It is only truly loud when you give it throttle. WOT is very loud but also sounds very good. WOT driving through an underpass is comical wake the dead loud, always puts a smile on my face.

Side note: my car is manual so I don't notice much drone, but the automatic guys tend to say the drone is unbearable to them, so this may be something you want to consider.

I might get a quote for the shop to swap the mufflers, and have them let me hear it with no mufflers before they put the new ones on.

Just make sure you listen to it outside of the shop. You don't want hear it indoors or near walls...

i had a guy finish the exhaust from the axle to the bumper. i used all stainless pieces, magnaflow 4x9 mufflers & i bought solo tips. it looks awesome, has more ground clearance than stock, is 3" from the header collector to the bumper and sounds unique.

down side is that particular muffler will drone like a sob if you let it.

Throwing in the resonators is a good tip! Thanks! Im going to go by and just tell em i want something loud but not crazy and see what they quote. I think the borla Stype sounds amazing in the clips. But 800+ is hard to stomach for two mufflers.

The biggest advantage to getting an exhaust system from a big name is they did the research already and you can usually find a good sampling of what it sounds like on line. Borla for instance has a page where you can hear OEM then each of their offerings.

Having a shop custom make one means you get what they think is the perfect sound

Custom and one of a kind is not always the best option

Completely makes sense, Borla's video is great and one of the reasons theyre top of my list. I was mad i couldnt find product videos from magnaflow.
