SCCA magazine just did an article about this and had comments from aftermarket performance brake companies. The comments were drilled is a waste and make the rotor too brittle. However slotted can provide some advantages, specifically helping the rotor as a heat sink and also as unavailablezl1 mentioned it will scrape a thin layer of the pad off cleaning it and ensuring that fresh pad material is being used.

The other thing the slots do is help vent the gasses generated when using the brakes. Agreed that drilled rotors are not much value and if used hard can develop cracks.
