Painting engine cover
Anyone painted their own engine cover? If so, what type of paint did you use? I have seen the painted covers for sale but they are expensive and am thinking of trying it myself.

Yes I painted mine DIY. It came out pretty nice. It's not perfect but it was fun, I learned a lot and I like it. I started with engine enamel. I didn't like the way the engine enamel was unevenly covering the pattern on the V6 engine cover so i did the final coat with thick red brake caliper paint! I coated the brake paint with engine enamel clear coat. I painted the bow tie with krylon glitter blast and krylon clear coat. It has totally held up.
If I were to do another one, I would do it differently. I would not use rattle cans, i bought a spray paint setup for compressor since then. I would try some adhesion promoter first. I was going to buy a new cover and do a better job but, heck, i like it. If you mess up, replacement covers are pretty cheap.

I've painted two covers, and I always use the same procedure; a gray primer, then the basecoat, then the clear then rotary polish, orbital polish and finally seal. I use the paints from automotivetouchup.com...great vendor.

Thread
I actually made a thread on this when I did mine. I used a couple of different types of paint and finished it with a high temp clear. Hope this helps

I took mine off and threw it in the spare parts bin in the basement. I just like the raw look of a natural engine without a 10 cent piece of plastic covering it.
One thing I did think of doing was painting the intake manifold so it didn't look like the big chunk of black plastic that it is. I miss old engines. You could pop the hood and look at them, even a regular 350 in Chevy red, for a long time, like a piece of art. |

_lots_ of people have painted their engine covers. there's a riverside something or other company on here that basically paints stock parts and resells them. They've got all kinds of interior parts as well if you're not a diy person.
