I don't have any experience with that oil, but I don't see a dexos label. That may be important if you care about warranty.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't pursue this route. Especially if you have a 1LE, i wouldn't use anything other that what is specifically stated in the manual.
Napa is currently running a sale on Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 that is dexos 2 certified and approved for dd/track use on the 1LE. At $4.99/qt. plus the cost of the filter, you'd be saving almost $100. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/VAF966 |

Am I missing something, save $100, the dealership I use only charges $65 for an oil change.

1. 5w30 dexos1 which is for DD *only* (and likely what your dealer uses) and 2. Either 0w40 Dexos2 or 5w40 Dexos2 which is for BOTH: DD *and* track use. Cheers! |

I knew that, but I didn't realize the 0w40 was so expensive. The Syn is 5-40, so why would it be so much more expensive? That's a big jump from $65 to I can save $100. How much would that stuff cost if you didn't save $100?

5w30 is a dexos1 oil and NOT suited for race track. Hence i suspect that's why it is cheaper. Go on Napa website to check regular prices. Neither is cheap hence it is nice when they go on sale and even nicer when members advertise here when they do |

Well that’s an eye opener. I’m sure the dealer gets a price break, but I feel better getting charged ‘only’ $65 if that stuff is that expensive.

I don't track it. My big hobby is shooting, which is plenty expensive all by itself. The Camaro is just to make DD more fun.

The simplistic explanation is any xW-30 oil will have a lower viscosity than a xW-40 or xW-50 weight oil once they reach normal operating temps. With lower viscosity, you'll be risking damaging engine internals because of the combined higher temps and engine loads that come with track use. Becomes much more of a technical topic once you start considering different additives that are in different brands of oil.

One thing to keep it mind is that dealers might be putting in Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W40 as part of std fill now. So the OP should check what oil his car was filled with. |
