A8 vs A10
So with it now confirmed that the new ss will be getting the A10, can anyone elaborate on why it is better? I’m assuming it can hold more power, but why? Also, for those of us that plan on forced induction, are the shorter gears really better? Just hoping to get some key differences between the two. Thanks.

Power aside. The shorter gears will help in the quarter and 60. And I read something about a 'drag mode' similar to that of a mustang. Basically all the praise the current mustang is getting from the benefits of the A10 will be passed over to the Camaro.

The launch control sounds like it's similar to what's in the A8's

After driving owning multiple automatics from Chevrolet/Gm this ten speed is on another level. The shifts are quick responsive from the driver while in manual mode its nearly instantaneous as long as Rpm will not exceed tolerances.
The trans logic is impressive IMO in the 10 speed. I was wondering when other platforms will get this transmission. Chevrolet and ford did amazing job on 10 speed. |

If they programmed the A10 in the SS like they did in the ZL1, that would almost be worth it alone to get into a SS. The shifts are buttery smooth, extremely fast, trans knows what gear you want to be in. Strength is yet TBD, but there have been several ZL1s making big power and I have read from a couple of references it's just as strong as the A8s which we all know can handle a ton of power.

My brother was a die-hard M6 guy, I got my 6gen, an show room stock hurt his Full bolt-on feelings, so he went an test drove the '18 mustang with A10 and 3.55s, was sold on that transmission because at how fast and responsive it was in stock form. A week later he traded his car in on an '18 A10 3.15 car. Showroom stock, both of our cars were even for the most part. From a dig that Mustang wouldn't spin no matter how hard he launched it which gave him an advantage. From a 40roll the Camaro would put lengths on the Mustang. 60Roll the cars were dead even. The Mustangs 40 roll was later fixed with a tune from Lund, and the car will now spin the oem tires on a launch, but hook really well on some Hoosiers. We've both done nearly the same mods to our cars over the last 6months, the cars have remained quite even with each other. So I'm curious if the Camaro A10 will have the same sluggish 40 hit that the Mustang did, and also what rear gear they put in the car. Everyone agrees that the A8 could use a bit of gearing, so I hope they don't put some trash economy gear behind the A10.

In stock form the A10 is tuned much better from the factory, but the A8 comes to life with a good TCM tune. That being said, I honestly do not see it being a huge upgrade but perhaps a noticeable one. The A8 is only getting a bad rap because of the converter shudder issue. That is not a trans problem. The A8 will hold a bunch of power in stock form and it is a completely different animal with tuning. Also the gearing is not much different between the 2 transmissions for the first 4 gears. 5th is the biggest difference where the A10 is 1.56 and the A8 is 1.27...so the A8 will have more RPM drop on the 4-5. So in a nutshell the 2 transmissions are similar to 4th gear, the A10 has basically 1 more useable gear before 1:1 and adds another overdrive.
A10 1st - 4.70 2nd- 2.99 3rd- 2.15 4th- 1.80 5th- 1.52 6th- 1.28 7th- 1 8th-.85 9th-.69 10th-.64 A8 1st- 4.56 2nd- 2.97 3rd- 2.08 4th- 1.69 5th- 1.27 6th- 1 7th- .85 8th- .65

From a drag racing perspective, 1st gear being a little bit steeper will help you get off the line a touch quicker. Also the tighter spacing of the 4-5-6 ratios in the A10 helps keep it in it's powerband better. The A8 winds out to 64-6500 (which is past peak power) so it's shift recovery comes back around the 5k mark. In other words, a somewhat stock LT1 is wheezing heavy in the higher rpm range...but it needs to in order to get a shift recovery that isn't too low in the power curve. Taking out the TM in the A8 at the track I think would negate the firm positive shifts we have seen in the A10 Furd and the ZL1 so in that aspect, it's a wash. Edit; Ha, King beat me to the response.

Its actually pretty close except 5th gear. Aside from that a good aftermarket torque converter for the A8 would negate any of this advantage in the 1/4 mile.

a10, at least with the ZL1 TCM, is currently the fastest trans in the world.
It works completely differently than the A8 as well. Much different mechanics involved from what I am understanding. It keeps multiple gears spinning at the same time so you arent waiting for gear sets in the trans to come up to speed. |

Pretty close like 3.73 gear versus 3.90 gear.. the advantage is enough along with shift speed up or down. The choice between the two transmissions is a no brainer especially since there is so much bad press on the A8 in Caddy, Corvette, and Camaro.
