Serviceable or not an issue?

While removing my driveshaft today, I noticed the backend of my M6 transmission had a severed bushing or gasket. There doesn’t seem to be anything leaking at all.

Is this serviceable or is it even an issue?

Look closely and you can see the severed section.

That’s on the output shaft of the transmission?

Yes, that seal is replaceable. In your case, with the shaft out, you might want to go ahead and replace it. Normally, if it did not leak, I would leave it.

How many miles on the car? Was the driveshaft ever removed before?

The car has 150,000 miles on it. Yes, I have taken the driveshaft out several times for other installs. It’s a 1 piece shaft.

How difficult is it to change this part out? Any part numbers?

It's not that bad, but I've never done it in the car. Mine was out for a build when I changed it.

I figure I might as well change the seal while I’m there. Anything else that should be changed in that area?

Do I have to drain the transmission fluid first for this job? Or is the fluid low enough when the car isn’t on that it won’t leak when changing the seal?

It would probably be wise to take a quart out. You might know this already, but if you hold a vac hose on the open fill hole while you take the drain plug out, fluid won't come out until you take the vac hose off the fill. It will allow you to control how much oil you drop and you won't make a mess putting the plug back in with oil still in the trans. Works for when you overfill your oil too.

I know many say to torque to 100 ft lbs, but in the ProDemand service site, it shows differently, unless im reading it wrong. It also looks like you need to replace with a new washer and nut.

1. Using J 44765 install the new transmission case extension seal (1).
2. Install the drive flange to the transmission output shaft.
3. Install a NEW drive flange thrust washer.
4. Install the J 45012 to the drive flange.
5. While holding J 45012 , install a NEW drive flange nut using J 29873.
6. Tighten the drive flange nut to 57 N.m (42 lb ft).

So now I’m really confused. The instructions on my last post are for “on the vehicle” but I found a section for “off the vehicle” and it says to torque the Propshaft Nut to 100 ft lbs.

They are the same part. Why different torque specs? WHYYYYYYYYYY!!!
