A8 Tuning Question

If this has been covered elsewhere, I apologize.

I've searched around but couldn't find an answer. I've been getting conflicting reports on the 2017 A8 tuning. Some tuners have told me it's $200 to unlock and tune, others says the 2017 doesn't require the unlock.

I've also been told that the transmission tune does nothing noticeable on the A8. Considering the difference a street tune made on my previous car, I can't imagine that a transmission tune on the car will "not make a noticeable difference". I will have LT headers, CAI and Tune. What can I expect with the A8?

Any info or advice is Greatly Appreciated.

2017+ tcm requires an unlock.

Depending on what you do, or who tunes it, tuning it could be ho-hum, or night and day difference.

it definitely wakes the car up and makes it feel like that's how it should be from the factory.

Some people charge $100, some $200. But you can tune the ECU without having to unlock it, but because of the A8 and it's all too infamous shudder I would 100% get it tuned. I have almost the same mods, headers, CAI, exhaust, and E85 and the trans tune has made a world of difference. My father has a 2018 and he cant talk enough about how bad he wants the trans tuned because of how much better it is after tuning. Even after driving both his and mine I would take the trans tune all day.

Gotcha. That clears things up a bit. Now I just have to find someone in Mississippi - Alabama - Louisiana who will touch the LT1.

You could always do a remote tune, it might cost more because you need to buy the gauges and the wide band sensor which could be between $400-600 plus add the tune cost on top of that if you don't find someone local

This. To be clear:

2017 and up:
ECM: 4 credits
TCM: 4 credits plus additional $200 to HP Tuners to physically unlock the T87A
FSCM: 1 credit

The above does not include the cost of the MPVI2 adapter from HP Tuners ($299) or the labor if you hire someone to actually do the tuning.

I've got a shop that has quoted $3,000 for CAI, Texas Speed LT's and X Pipe, and tune (engine and trans).. How does that price compare to what y'all have seen?

They are a very reputable shop in Mobile, AL.

I'd run away from any shop that recommends TSP headers. I've seen many installs. Not a fan.

I Had them on my 2015 for 4 years and never had an issue. I haven't heard anything negative about them when it comes to the 6th gen. What have you seen that turns you off from them?

I’m not a fan of TSP headers either. Offshore steel and manufacturing is a cut below ARH/Kooks in my humble opinion.

A lot of installs with them on the ZL1 have rubbing issues, clearance issues, etc. Seems silly to not spend the extra little bit up front to avoid issues down the road. Great luck with ARH and Kooks. I'm sure there are some installs of TSP that are fine, but no question the ARH and Kooks are a superior product.
