Gen v 5.3 high boost low budget build

I dropped a valve last year on my 6.2. It had drop ins, head studs and some valve train stuff and made nearly 1100hp. I have been debating in what to replace it with for awhile.

To keep me busy I went ahead and dropped a stock gen v 5.3 in the car. It has been fun to play with and has allowed me to finish other mods I had planned like an air to water intake and chiller set up.

I have no idea what a 100% stock one of these will take. We took it to 15psi and made 678hp. Seems decent to me. The chiller is working well, look at the mat in the pic below! It does have some condensation issues when the weather is warmer.

The plan is once the weather turns crappy to swap in some drop ins and some valve train parts and reuse a few parts from my 6.2 like the cam and head studs and then give it hell. Like 30+psi hell. It should be fun. These motors are stacked up at the junk yards around here and can be had for $1000-$1700 depending on miles.

All his threads are. He tinkers like an old mad scientist who never would retire, wife thinks he's crazy and has proof but doesn't know how to help him. So she just leaves him alone in his garage knowing at least he's not out chasing women. Right Parish? Foxy, no I'm not drinking. Forgot to ask will this be a stock bore 5.3?

Stock bore, just the gpi drop ins. No balancing. No head work.

The head work part bothers me a little being that I dropped an exhaust valve on the 6.2. I looked into getting them done and every route seemed to add up to a lot of money. I am pretty sure the 5.3 does not have hollow stem exhaust valves. That seems like it should help.

Does anyone know if the 5.3’s in stock trucks have a history of dropping valves? I have heard it isn’t uncommon in the newer trucks but was thinking that was for the 6.2 motor.

I think they are pretty stellar and make great power when boosted. You always see a lot of 5.3s at the track with Turbo's. Probably the most popular boosted motor out there right now. As you said they are everywhere and priced right. Good luck

I believe you are talking about the gen 3/4 5.3. Those are well proven. This is the gen v DI motor. There is less known about these engines.

what did your factory 6.2 and drop in 6.2 make at 15psi? I'm very very temped to follow suit with your lead. The 6.2 over head cost is still stupid expensive. I don't really care about the cubes, I care about the et and mph.

I did notice the johnson lifters $$$$$$

Could we see a turbo 5.3 2016 camaro SS vs turbo 5.3 2016 camaro SS grudge race in Indiana???

Different dyno but I am pretty sure the stock motor was over 700rwhp at 11psi. I will look for some graphs.

What I am seeing is 770hp at 11psi. Pretty big bump at lower boost.

Yeah. Doing some btr springs shimmed properly. Johnson lifters and 3/8” pushrods. Not cheap but not crazy money either. If this thing wants to rev I want it to rev.

I will post up some specific part numbers just in case this thing runs good and someone wants to copy my parts. The cam is kinda big. I will find those specs too.

Cool Swap!

Greg's statement would be left coast true, I've seen quite a lot of Gen V turbo trucks out here. Great little motor, just use your 6.2 fuel system components, they have smaller DI injectors than the LT1 engines (same HP pump).

Ahh, didn’t think of that. There should be some decent data out there all ready then.

Wanted to add to this got a moment. It's a long thread but this is what I remember. 2wd 14 Silverado, 5.3 DI started with a PC and ended putting down 700 with cam and headers. Eventually ran a 10.9x with that. His buddy did the same with a 2.9 Whipple at 714 wheel. Allen took off the PC and did this turbo stock sbe. Said it was a bit lazy so he was going smaller iirc.

His build thread is one of the main reasons I got into Gen 6 Camaros. No homo.

I figure it’s going to be down on power, to a point, all depends on where flow ends up on efficiency as to ultimately how much

I’m interested to see your intake set-up.

30deg cooler MAT than inlet is yuuuge at roughly 2x atmospheric.
