I haven't ordered anything big yet. Not gonna do anything major until after the break-in period anyway.

I don't have room in my garage, so I did buy a temp one and put that up so she has somewhere to sleep. I also got a couple of new tools and smaller items to work on her (I like doing my own work as much as I can). The only other things I was looking to get before hand was a catch-can, maybe some rock guards as I live off a dirt/gravel road, and probably oil for my first oil change. Part of my break-in process is an initial old change after the first 50 miles, or about a week.

Especially with the way GM is testing these engines, I like to get that early oil change in to clear out any particulates from all the parts wearing together. After that, most of the break-in is for CPU and overall synchronization of motor, brakes, drivetrain, suspension, etc. After the 1500 break-in miles, I do another oil change and change diff fluid and maybe trans as well. I am planning on tracking my car occasionally and so I want to make sure it's in tip top shape.

I totally feel your anticipation though. It's obviously eating at me too. Forgetting what weekend it was.

Sounds like a pretty good plan. Should keep you busy and entertained for a few months. Hang in there, we will get through this week and the reward for our patience will hopefully come early next week!

I just did a little research on the need for the catch can and looks like I will be ordering one as well. I'm a little surprised this isn't an option to add with Chevy but oh well. I am not very mechanically incline, so I would had preferred to have Chevy add it. I am one those guys that loves to drive the car but hates to work on them. However, I just watched a video how to install one on a 2016 and it did not look too difficult. So I will give it a shot. I also have been killing some time reading the owners manual online. Which has been fun. Here is the link to the manual.

Yes, from everything I've researched, I wonder why it's not an option on every performance/tuner/high-end vehicle on the market. I understand that they are not entirely needed because the crap burns up in the engine, but that is just supposed to be fresh air. I don't want crap in my engine as much as I can help it and if a little part and 5min install will fix that, you know I'm gonna be all over it.

Thanks for the manual link. Didn't already have it, but now that I do, gonna have to read it.

Not all that crap burns up, part of it doesn't even make it past the intake valves but cokes on top of them. It's a neverending debate, my choice was to install a catch can even though critics say it's "snake oil" and "makes no difference", I can tell it does arrest some of the gunk.

The most likely reason this isn't offered by manufacturers is that 1) it requires user performed maintenance, which cannot be expected of people anymore, plus an overflowing catch can cause severe damage, and 2) they think the rerouted blowby won't be enough to cause issues during the warranty period. Also, GM did implement a partial solution on the LT1.

A catch-can definitely is not a "snake oil" solution. If it was, it would never need to be emptied. But yes, it's a part that requires some amount of maintenance. If your car runs out of oil or transfluid, it's also bad, and I'd be will to bet you could get any mechanic that does oil changes to also empty out the catch can while they are at it.

I am not familiar with the partial solution on the LT1, what is it?

"Along with the improved oiling system, the Gen 5 engine also incorporates an all-new patent-pending integrated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. This system works to reduce oil consumption (thus increasing oil life) by separating oil and air with up to 3-times the efficiency found in the Gen 3/4 engines. The new valve covers feature baffled domes between each coil to separate oil found in the crankcase from air, while the AFM solenoids feature revised "foul air separators" for similar reasons."

I guess my question for you guys since all of this is new to me, is how often should I empty the catch can? At every oil change? 10,000 miles? Other?

It varies car to car and also depends on the physical size of the can (Elite Engineering cans are large, for example), I for one check it every 2000-2500 miles.

Jannetty Racing kindly added a drain valve to the bottom of my can that originally had to be taken apart, so I don't have to disassemble but just open and then close the valve to flush the can, but even without this, unscrewing the cap or the bottom of the can is a trivial task.

From everything I have read and seen, if you are getting the 4oz model that is the most common vehicles (JLT, Mishimoto, etc. will all be referencing the 4oz units when you look it up be vehicle) after first installing it, you should at least check if not drain it every 1000 miles as the system gets used to the new part in line. After about 3000 miles, you should be OK to check it with oil changes, assuming you do those every 3000 miles.

So example, either install it when you first get car or after an oil change. Check every 1000 miles until next oil change.

Then just check with oil changes. (3000 miles)

This is the most common maintenance I have seen for these devices and the least intrusive overall in my opinion.
