What’s In My Oil

Hi Everyone,
Performed an oil change today (around 3k miles), and when pulling off my drain plug, these were attached to the magnetic end. Anyone know what’s going on? What these can be?

Stock rocker came apart. Pull valve cover look for needle bearings etc and replace broken rocker.. Drain oil and fish out all the needle bearing with a magnet. Its common on all the LS engines.

Yep he nailed it. If I remember right, there are 22 needle bearings in each side of the rocker. Pull the valve covers and inspect. You'll have needle bearings everywhere. there is a service bulletin from GM about this. Basically says to clean out what you can and leave the rest since they wont go through the pickup screen. Now's a good time to replace the rocker trunions with aftermarket ones. Also, get a magnet and fish down in the lifter trays. I found several in mine. It's been 2 oil changes later and I still find them in the pan. I use a magnet to drag them to the opening and extract them

Thank you both for the help. Since this is all new to me, any thoughts on aftermarket parts I should order?

I recently installed the CHE bushing set, which replaces the stock roller bearings with brass bushings for $200. Very easy install and I bought a Harbor Freight Arbor press for $60 that made pressing out the old bearings super easy.

The new bushings get held in place by snap rings and don't need to be pressed in.

Engine has 44k miles. So I took the valve covers off and looked at the rockers. None of them are broken. I should have taken a photo, but I wanted to see how bad it was. All rockers look good. A few were a little loose, nothing crazy. I took a screen photo of a rocker arm and pointed to where mine broke. Looks like it was the outer portion of the bearing/trunnion. I ordered a new set to replace the old ones and will do that this week. Name: ABF63ECA-879A-4453-B5BE-F5F8F8AB008A.jpg

What’s the service life of the brass bushings?

On this day of national prayer and reflection, I’d find that shit in my oil truly horrifying! The stock motor has no better parts than this? In the Driveline world where I live, we consider needle bearings far superior to bushings. I’m torn on the idea.

For example, bushings have been tried and used in universal joints over time. Needles still rule.

Are you the original owner/buyer of this car? If not, maybe previous owner had an issue with valve train?

You know, I have absolutely no idea. Looks like I have some research to do tonight. I do know that they have oil channels in them though.

Gotcha me too! I’ve seen a few of these rocker bearing failure threads and it makes me want to Bush mine and not have to worry about it.
