Short Shift?

I'm doing an HPDE event soon and have a questions regarding the main straight.

Should i hold 4th until redline or just 6000 and go to 5th.

I'm not sure if pushing til red is ideal here.

What's your thought?

5th is so stupid tall that the longer you can continue to accelerate in 4th, the faster you'll be.

Can someone double check that the data is correct? Do the top speeds/gear at redline match real world?

6th Gen SS and 1LE M6 Final Drive: 3.73

6th Gen SS and SS-1LE Tremec TR6060 M6 Gear Ratios (overall):
1st - 2.66 (9.92)
2nd - 1.78 (6.64)
3rd -1.3 (4.85)
4th - 1.0 (3.73)
5th - 0.74 (2.76)
6th - 0.5 (1.87)

Max theoretical speed/gear (MPH) with SS 275/35R20 rear tires (27.6in diameter):
1st - 53
2nd - 80
3rd - 110
4th - 143

5th - 193
6th - 286

For 1LE rear tire 305/30R20 (27.2 in diameter), corrected -˜1.4%:
1st - 52
2nd - 79
3rd - 108
4th - 141

There's nothing wrong with short shifting if there's traffic ahead that you expect to catch but revving it out to near 6500rpm before each shift on the straights should produce faster lap times. I will short shift 3rd ro 4th gear before some corners with apex speeds in the 80mph range (or not downshift from 4th after braking before those corners) to limit torque in the corner to reduce/eliminate oversteer.

Agreed you want to hold 4th gear until the last moment if you need to use 5th on the SS 1LE because 5th is geared for 190mph but the car maxes out around 175mph in stock form.

After thorough testing... 5th gear is useless at Road America.

I got to 148 mph on the main straight.

...The tuned Huracan on R7's got to 160 (cough)

Since I'm on engine #2, I'm short shifting to 5th at around 125-130 to avoid prolonged high revs. Sure acceleration takes quite a hit vs 4th, but at VIR it costs you only a couple mph by the time you get to the brake zone at the end of the long straights.

Spun rod bearings while tracking it, 5K miles at the time.
