Yea I feel ya on that one. I saw your car once parked by startbucks/7/11 in Mountain View by Google campus. I think I parked next to you for all of 10minutes while I got coffee lol.

Ah, yeah, that would have been me. I used to work right over there.

At high altitude it makes less difference, this is why you don't get 93 in NM and CO, maybe other states. CA is at a larger disadvantage vs the rest of the country, and it's a "special" CA only 91 that I've heard is even worse. Some cars like Subaru turbo cars have a lot of problems with it.

I had never heard of that? So not as much of a need for 93 here at our altitude? Because it is literally no where to be found.

It’s the knock sensor. It sees knock, it pulls timing.

My tuner tunes l86’s all over the country. (Blackbear if familiar) He was sitting in my passenger seat doing a street tune. Not many people In the world have more experience tuning l86’s while looking at live data.

I’m quoting him “you’re not getting any knock, wow NJ has good gas” i was on 93.

So if he’s surprised I’m getting zero knock on 93, you can bet your bottom dollar that all of you are pulling timing on 91.

I have no doubt. Like I said, it is very apparent just by the tonality changes of the exhaust note.

This is common with the LS & LT motors. My C5 Z06's all did it too.

Sucks that in order to get full performance, you have to basically pay double for gas. Mixing in 101 to get a mix of about 95-96 octane just about doubles your fill up cost.

I'm still waiting for California to declare gasoline a controlled substance. You know they don't want you burning that stuff.

Yes he is right, at higher altitudes, which have lower barometric pressure, you don't need as high an octane as you would at sea level. You are more than 5000' ASL in ALB, so won't really need 93 in your stock 1LE up there, 91 should be ok.

A couple of gallons of E85 with every fill up will give you the same knock resistance and is probably cheaper than 101, and won't require a tune. FYI-adding a flex fuel sensor and tuning with E85 netted me 30 HP/30 FT-Lbs. of torque.

Agree with others, increased octane will not add power but it will prevent the loss from knock sensors to a point, going too high in a non-high compression engine will hurt performance. The larger concern is to make sure you don't use leaded fuel as it will poison your cats in short order, the Sunoco race gas sold here is 100 octane leaded.

I have seen Sunoco 100 at the pump and it was unleaded. Might want to check for more info on that pump that's near you?
