5w-40 oil in the ZL1

Thinking about switching to Royal Purple SAE 5W-40 High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil for my next oil change. They have a 0w-40 but it does not have the Synerlec additive. The 5W-40 does. They also have the HPS oil in 10w-40 with the zinc / phosphorus package.

Pros / cons?

I would use the weight the owners manual recommends just to be safe for your engine!

Royal Purple is probably the last synthetic I would pick

Castrol Edge, Amsoil, Mobil 1 EP (not th standard stuff) all fare well in standardized tests.

I just did an oil change for my 2018 ZL1 using the OEM recommended Mobil 1 Dexos 5W-30 with the AC Delco PF 64 Oil Filter and installed the Dimple Oil Drain Plug

Use the recommended/best: Mobil 1 ESP Full Synthetic 0W40

Yes sir! I used the M12x1.75×21 Magnetic Drain Plug for GM
Recent models bottom of the page

I just put my stock drain plug back in the Dimple container that it came in.

We have the same engine and the 5W hasn't grenaded your internals?

Na, just using the oem approved for my car. I don't track my car either.
It says right on my filler cap 5W-30 Dexos, so that's what I use

For competitive driving the 2017 and 2018 manual states to use 0W-40 or 5W-40. For 2019s and up models GM recommends 0W-40 in general for the LT4.
It is now also factory fill for LT4 Corvettes etc.
So why not use the better oil.

My owners manual says SAE 5W-30 and also has it on the filler cap, so that's what I use. There are plenty of oil threads on here, so to each their own.

While I doubt any issues will come up with 5-weight, I believe GM did say they recommend the 0W over the 5W (excepting the ZLE) from earlier models, but it's just a sematic I think. 5W is just a little thicker in the cold, and I don't drive mine in the cold, so it doesn't matter too much to me. I'm more concerned with the Dexo 2 certification.
