At dealer for steering recall need help

The dealer is telling me this loss of steering recall is just a software update. Someting about steering radius and cpu . Is this the correct proceedure? I have read others have hardware replaced.

No it is a replacement of the entire steering gear assembly.

Thank very much. I showed him your note and he said sorry they need to order parts.

I usually take my car to a dealer about 45 mins away to have service (Wallace Chevrolet in Stuart, Fl) but decided to have this dealer (Dyer Chevrolet in Ft Pierce, Fl) since it is only 15 mins away do it. The Service Tech said they run a diagnostic test and if it fails they put a new Steering rack in and he said it was a major job. Of course mine failed. Not what I wanted to hear. I asked him if they have done this procedure to other Camaro's since I did not want to be a test case for the Tech. He said about 1 in 3 fail the diagnostic test and they have done a bunch of them. Wasted trip for me and my wife who followed because I thought they would have the parts and keep the car since I waited a month after notified the parts were available. He also said a lot of Fifty Anniversary editions fail. Again thanks for a quick response while I was at the dealership.

I've had mines done the same day. I scheduled an appointment to be one of the first cars in and got it back before dealer closed.

It isn't limited to Chevy dealers...my boss had same thing happen a couple of years ago with a Toyota recall. Got notice, he even called and they told him to bring it in. After he gets there and they check he got, "oh we don't have the parts, it'll be a while before all the parts come in".

Recall letter says 5 hours however that is what they allow GM to bill for. I bet in most cases it takes less.

It's cute that you measure dealer service times in hours and not days. 5 hours is definitely at least 1 day...probably 2.

At least that's been my limited experience.

If I haven't received a recall letter can I assume my car is not affected?
