I don't think Ford did anything to try and steals Chevy's thunder. They announced the specs before the LA auto show, like they do every year.

I bet it will cost more, maybe 5k more. You have to pay for all that extra power.

It looked on purpose to me. They would have released more info at the time but threw out the most important numbers.

They released the rest of the specs at the auto show a few days later. Ford has been doing their preliminary spec releases before the LA Auto Show for a while, but I can see how it might appear that way.

The current 500's are upper 50's by the time you add anything to them..... talk 65+ by the time it's "ZL1-Able"

If by "anything" you mean "everything" which includes the 2000 dollar glass roof and the 2340 dollar electronics package.

In reality, I paid just over 49,100 OTD for my 2012 with all the performance goodies (which is just the SVTPP).

I think you'll be surprised. There is talk of Ford just dumping the "options" and bringing it as one package like GM is doing with the ZL1. Which I hope is the case because even though I had a 2011 GT500 with the SVTPP it irked me I had to pay even more for top performance.

My 2011 GT500 with SVTPP was around $53k MSRP and $48K plus tax out the door.

That would be interesting to see.

I hope it's not the case, because if you just want a street and strip terror, a lot of people won't want to pay 6 grand+ extra for electronic shocks, diff coolers, etc that won't really make a difference to them.

Most of these cars, both GT500 and ZL1, are not going to spend much time on twisty tracks. I think Chevy would have been smart to release a ZL1 without the added weight and expense of the MRC and all the coolers. That car with an auto tranny coulda come in close to 50k and been a strip terror. Instead it's gonna come in close to 60 and not really be any better on the street or the strip.

I think it was a good move to make the statements. Everybody seems to think that the new GT500 is going to walk right over the ZL1 because of the HP. By coming out and telling people that he thinks that the ZL1 is still the superior package is telling everyone he is confident in his product. Camaro people are going to buy the ZL1. Mustang people are going to buy the GT500 there is no question. People with no allegiances that are just looking for the fastest car would buy the Mustang just because of the precieved superior performance. This is just his way of saying, the Mustang may not be that superior. Time will tell.
