Valvoline MST 5w40 no longer Dexos2!!!

Note Valvoline has changed this oil's recipe to broaden its application and as a consequence it no longer meets Dexos2 standard required for the Camaro.

Thank you to Timbo for pointing this out in the Mechanical section, Camaros oils sticky.

Cheers!

Do you have a source that says the oil has changed? I've seen the new 'non-Dexos 2' cans and asked the question on the 1LE FB page, but most simply rebuffed it as old packaging.

Yes. Go to Mechanical section and then oil sticky.
There is an official reply there saying the formula has changed.
Cheers!

I wonder how much it has really changed. Probably would still be compliant, but Valvoline likely doesn't want to pay for the license. And ultimately for Warranty claims, in case you need to do that, the bottle needs to show Dexos2. So I guess it's now time to find a new affordable alternative.

With that said, what's the difference for Dexos 1 Gen 2 labeling, and Dexos 2? Clearly not the same if the licensing is different.

Go to GM Dexos website it explains it well. Cheers!

Performance supplement says

Quote:
if this oil is not available, the following oils can be used as an alternative: Valvoline SYNPOWER MST 5W-40 or Mobil1 15W-50. If 15W-50 is used, the engine oil must be changed after the track event.

So no the bottle does not need to say Dexos2 if you use MST you are still ok as it is called out in the owners manual.

This is an old 16/17MY manual and refers to the old formula which eventually got Dexos2 certification.
The current MST is not the same formula. I dont know how it differs to make it "available for wider use", or if it would again pass Dexos2. But on Valvoline website it is NOT listed as an oil approved for a Camaro LT1 motor.
Also, i would not expect GM to issue any type of correction to 3-4 yr old manuals...
However, it seems the new MST now has a different name, which includes "for Euro cars". If that's indeed the case, then it does NOT match what is listed in the old manuals and GM is off the hook.

2018 Says it as well

If they changed the name away from "MST" well then hah guess that wont work

hopefully they start selling the new M1 locally.

No 'MST' on the new labeling.
